have you updated firmware to 1.90?   if so, then ensure there are no scratches or smudges on the disc...if there are none, then yes, the disc may just be bad.

Re: this video cannot be played (80029940)

I have the same issue. Google returns numerous hits on "playstation 80029940" so it seems to be a common issue. In my case the blu-ray disc was from netflix (Planet Earth) and if it wasn't for the fact that turning off the PS3 power and turning it back on solved the problem I would have said it was also a disc error. Intuition tells me there is also a software issue which a cold start appears to fix. My system was upgraded to 1.9 and the problem persisted.

I read some discussion that the problem could include hairline cracks in the disc due to shipment through the US post. If the discs are that fragile it seems that Netflix will have a real issue supporting the format.

The retailer I bought the system from allows returns within 15 days, so I have two days left to decide. My concerns are compounded by the following note on the Netflix site " Recently manufactured Blu-ray and HD DVD discs may not be compatible with all Blu-ray or HD DVD players." which implies that the "standard" is still evolving.

Any positive feedback appreciated since I don't want to be stuck with a lemon.

Make sure you have the latest software updates which in this case did not help my problem. I then resorted to pulling out the disk and finding the ol greasy taco smudge fingerprint on the DVD play surface. A good 10 seconds of elbow grease  with a shirt tail took care of the problem.

Same thing happening to me.  Was trying to watch on netflix and I just had stopped watching about 2 hours before.  Definitely a problem that just started out of nowhere.  Checked the disk and it's as clean as a whistle. No cracks either.

Same problem (This video cannot be played (80029940)) with a BD from Netflix (The Debt).  The disk is clean and has no cracks.  I can take the same disk and put it on another system (non-PS3) and it works fine.  Tried powering down and unplugging PS3.  No effect.  Another Netflix BD (The Last Airbender) works fine.

Using PS3 System 4.11
