This is so weak sauce. Just bought a ps3 and sucked to find it not recognizing my external hard drive when my Wii does recognize it and powers it via USB so I can pretty much watch any video I have on my external drive.. Guess I just bought a really expensive Blu-Ray player that plays Little Big Planet lol...
Nice of way of adding nothing to the discussion lol.. People could help you if we lol knew the brand of portable hard drive, lol capacity, and other aspects lol... Guess some people like to register, make one post that doesn't help, and then never come back lol...
is there any way to keep it formatted as mac osx extended and have the playstation recognize it?
Yes! However, there is no need to do this unless the hard drive has a file larger than 4GB. Mac OS X can read FAT32 formatted discs just fine. There are plenty of partition tools for Mac OS X that can do this. The PS3 won't reat the HFS+ formatted partition but it will recognize the FAT32 portion.

Hey everyone, I was having a similar problem with my 320gig external hard drive today, PS3 wouldn't recognize it. I partitioned 30gigs and formatted to FAT32, and while its now acknowledging the drive, it's not seeing any files on it. AVI, MP3 and MP4. Just comin up with nothing.
Anyone got any thoughts? Any help is greatly appreciated. The drive is a western digital 320gig USB 2.0 for anyone interested.
Disregard post, I had a temporary lapse of common sense and forgot to do the MUSIC/VIDEO folder thing on the root of the drive. Sorted. Sorry for the bump.
