Hey. I just got a WD 1 Tb elements HDD.
And what i can gather from this thread is that it MUST be fat32 to work on the ps3. Well, since its new, i have no probs with formatting. However, will formatting it to fat32 affect its connection capability to my PC? [windows 7 ultimate)

No, Windows can read and write to FAT32 drives with no problem.

No, it just means that you can't use the tools built into Windows to format the hard drive.  This is completely normal and something that Microsoft started way back in 2001 when they released Windows XP.

Look through this thread as there are posts linking to software that will format your hard drive for you using the FAT32 file system.  You can also search the forums or conduct a 2 second Google search to get the results you want.  Either way, help has already been issued, you just have to take the time to look for it.

OK let me get this right. R U saying that I can partition my drive, just 1G, reformat it to FAT32, and then once it's recognizable, I can press triangle and access files on the whole drive. Including the Mac partitioned one? Ooorrrrr, do I have to partition a bigger part and actually move the files over to that partition. Then I would have tyhe same files on both partitions. Sorry if this is newbish, but I am.

The files would need to be in that FAT32 partition in order for the PS3 to read them.  So you can't partition just 1GB using FAT32 and have it recognize an entire hard drive formatted using any file system (such as NTFS, HFS+, exFAT, etc.) as the PS3 would read only that 1GB partition.  Want to read 40GB worth of video on your hard drive using your PS3?  You need to make a FAT32 partition that is at least 40GB in size.

Re: ps3 won't recognize external hard drive

XP & Vista will let you format to FAT32 from Disk Management. Although you must set the partition size no bigger than 32000MB before XP or Vista will let you choose the FAT32 file system & if you try to format anything larger than 32GB with the CMD shell it will go through the motions but when it reaches 100% it will tell you the volume is too large for the FAT32 file system.

I purchashed an external HDD - Iomega Select Desktop Hard Drive 1TB high speed USB 2.0 - $80 @ TigerDirect

I divided into 4 partitions - 3 primary + 1 logical
Iomega HDD I:   465.83 GB NTFS primary

New Volume J:  232.90 GB NTFS primary
New Volume K: 116.44 GB NTFS primary
New Volume P: 116.33 GB FAT32 logical

I read over & over about the FREE program SwissKnife - just forget about it because it's NOT FREE, it's $9.95.

The FREE program you want is EASEUS Partition Master 6.1.1 Home Edition - yes it's FREE $0.00.

Now open Disk Management & right click the drive you want to partition & create your 32000MB FAT32 partition.

When your massive 32GB drive is finished formatting exit Disk Management.

Open EASEUS Partition Master 6.1.1 Home Edition & select your 32GB FAT32 drive - then select "resize/move partition".

Now move the slider all the way over to the right as far as it will go. Select apply.

The FREE program will tell you it needs to reboot in order to complete the process, let it reboot & "KEEP HDD PLUGGED IN TO PC WHILE IT REBOOTS".

The FREE program will tell you the batch process was completed & your PC will reboot again, NOW you can unplug the HDD.

That's it, now when you go to Disk Management you will see your FAT32 drive whether its 100GB - 250GB - 1TB - THERE IT IS!!!

When you plug into your PS3 your HDD will be right there whether its a Primary drive or a Logical drive.

I know, I know, your welcome!!!!
