when i went to format my 1 terabyte hardrive the only option was exFAT.  Is that what i want with allocation unit size at 32 KB?

No, exFAT is not the same.

Assuming you are using Windows, download and use the HP USB Storage Format Tool.

Can you let me know step by step what you did.  I have a 16 year old son and we are trying install a 320 gig harddrive.  On the computer it is showing that it is in FAT32 format, but when I put it in the playstation it says that there is no information on the storage, but I can see it when I go to my computer and right click on the external drive.

If you don't have the media setup in specific folders that the PS3 requires in order to show on the XMB by default you will need to highlight the drive on the PS3, press triangle, and select Display all.  Hopefully that will help.

Also remember that only videos show up under the Videos category, only music files under Music, etc.

New HD's seems to be unrecognised now. Is there a 'search for USB media option' somewhere? My old WD HD's still work, but the 3 different new one's that were purchased within the last month don't pop up anymore.

You can stream the media (movies, pics and music) from for computer to the PS3 via your wireless network, no need to transfer them to an external hard drive. Use windows media  to share or download PS3 media server to your PC.

Hey. I just got a WD 1 Tb elements HDD.
And what i can gather from this thread is that it MUST be fat32 to work on the ps3. Well, since its new, i have no probs with formatting. However, will formatting it to fat32 affect its connection capability to my PC? [windows 7 ultimate)
