Streaming video from a PC to a PS3

15 replies 22847 views Edited Oct 28, 2007

Does anybody know if I could stream video from my home PC to a PS3 that is connected to my living room TV so I could watch the video on the TV? Here are more details:
  • I have a wireless network. The PC is hooked-up to the router by cable and the PS3 will be wirelessly connected
  • The video source is a proprietary player (i.e. not Real or MS player) on the PC. It receives video stream over the web and I would like this stream to be forwarded to the PS3
  • At the end of the say I would like to receive the video stream that originates from the web and is played on a proprietary player on my TV using my PS3 as a PC for that matter. However, as I know that I cant install the player on the PS3 (am I correct by assuming that the PS3 is not open for such installations) I was thinking about streaming from the PC to the PS3

Is this possible? If so then how? Is there an easier way?

Thanks!

Thanks but it explains how to stream a media stored on my PC. I am intrerested in "forwarding" a stream received on the PC (on a SW player) in real-time to the PS3. Another way to think about it is how to stream the screen of my PC to the PS3 in real-time.

This is correct. I am thinking how can I save a box in my living room. I stream TV shows from the web through a home media PC and am thinking if a PS will allow me both the gaming functionality as well as the video streaming capability and by that I wont need the PC. Makes sense?

It would depend on where you are streaming the media from. Since you have not provided that information, we cannot help you in any certain way. There is a program called Playon that will allow you to stream video from some popular sites to the PS3 (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, CBS, YouTube, CNN, ESPN, etc.). If your site is supported by Playon, then you should be good to go. If not, then you are probably SOL.

Everyone thinks I'm psychotic (except my friends deep inside the earth).

Give this a try - it solved all of my PS3 media streaming issues - i can browse my entire network from my PS3 - someone from Google wrote a java based PS3 media server
