Is it like a 1GB Thumb Drive? Can your Thumb Drive be seen on your PS3's XMB? If it's not their then most likely your Thumb Drive is not in a format ps3 supports. PS3 supports FAT32, so check the format of you Thumb Drive by putting it into your PC and in MY Computer and right click on your thumb drive and click properties. It should tell you the format of your thumb drive their.

you probably enabled the U3 Security Feature for the Device. Disable it because there is no way that you can login to it with  ps3s. login feature only works for pcs.

Correct, I had the same problem and got rid of the feature by disabling it, then bingo it worked.
