Mystery: My PS3 will play some Blu-ray discs, not others

Just bought a brand new copy of step into liquid on blu-ray, put it in my PS3 and the disc drive just makes noise, but no disc loads, nothing happens.  I try other blu ray discs (e.g., Quantum of Solace) and it loads and plays it just fine.

I have the ps3 slim, bought it just over one year ago and downloaded the latest software (3.5).  Games play without any issue, there is only a problem playing certain dvds (both blu ray and standard def).

Any help solving this mystery is greatly appreciated, this is infuriating!!

I am having the same issue. If anyone knows a way to fix this, I would greatly appreciate it as well.

Thanks.

Re: Mystery: My PS3 will play some Blu-ray discs, not others

Well, there are a couple of things to try.  You can eliminate the need to delete Blu-ray save data or disabling BD-Live functionality as the movies aren't even loading (you would want to complete those steps if all you get is a black screen when inserting the movies).  The first thing to do is reset the PS3's settings.  Scroll over to Settings in the XMB, go down to System Settings, then scroll down to Restore Default Settings.  This will only reset your PS3's settings, it won't delete any data.

Try playing a movie after that, you will have to change your PS3's audio and video output settings again.  The next thing to try would be an optical drive cleaner.  You don't want one that uses brushes.  There are specific Blu-ray drive cleaning solutions that you stick in the PS3's optical drive.  They are essentially CD's with small slits in them that clean any dust and particles off of the lens.  There are some disc drive cleaning solutions that have brushes attached to the bottom of the CDs.  DON'T use them as they will scratch your PS3's lens and make it useless.

The last thing to try would be completely restoring your PS3.  This will erase absolutely everything on it so you will need to backup your console first.  This may cost more than buying a disc driving cleaning solution, that is why I listed it last.  You essentially need a USB storage device with enough free space to store all of the content on your PS3's hard drive.  So you would essentially make a backup of your console, restore it, use the backup image to get all of your files back on it, and then try playing a Blu-ray movie.

The absolute last step would be contacting Sony if none of that worked.  They do charge quite a bit to service an out of warranty console.  The last I heard, Sony was charging $250 for out of warranty work.  You can go buy a new console for $50 more or a refurb/used console for less than that.  Things might have changed over time though.

Re: Mystery: My PS3 will play some Blu-ray discs, not others

The Expendables (blu-ray) freezes up on me about 1h9m into it, and wont start working again until ~1h13m. I'm assuming that it needs a firmware update considering I went through the same thing with:

Land of the Lost
Inglorious Basterds
State of Play

All 3 movies froze up the same way, but after Sony released (I think it was 3.4),  they all worked fine. The only downside with that is that it was quite a few months after I got the movies, that the patch was released. BTW, I have a fat 60gb PS3.

Same thing here.  120GB PS3 Slim, about thirteen months old.  Running 3.55.  Most movies play fine.  The ones below spin in the drive for 30 seconds, the drive makes a 'click' sound then nothing.  After repeated ejects and insertions (sometimes up to 20) they work.  Cleared the BD data and disconnected from PSN with no luck.  All PS3 games (~15) play just fine, all DVDs and PS1 games play fine.

Discs with issues:

Harry Potter 1-4

Twilight: Eclipse

Re: Mystery: My PS3 will play some Blu-ray discs, not others

It must be a completely random issue then.  I am watching Scott Pilgrim right now and it is playing fine, however, before watching this, I tried numerous times getting my PS3 to recognize The Expendables and no luck.  Also, for the other poster, all my Batman movies work and Avatar too.  So, it's not a problem with any specific movies apparently...it's frustrating.

Re: Mystery: My PS3 will play some Blu-ray discs, not others

Heres a long shot, rent a copy of the movie in question...

BluRay uses a very tight "shot group" of "1s" and "0s", maybe, just maybe defective BluRay disks are out in the wild.

Just a suggestion.
