I recently managed to get subtitles on mp4 videos using Vobsub and MeGUI. The resulting mp4 video file plays correctly with VLC media player and displays subtitles. When I copy the same mp4 video file to PS3, it plays fine but does not display subtitles. Does PS3 not support subtitles?

Subtitles display fine on files that I downloaded off the net, so it could be a problem with the way you're putting them in your videos.

Hmmm... Since there are plenty of threads complaining about the latest fw 2.20 breaking the mp4 videos (the fw introducing subtitles for compressed videos), your claim that your mp4s play correctly but do not display subtitles can mean ONLY one thing: you didn't update to 2.20. If such is the case, don't do it either if you care about your mp4.There is a fat chance that they will not display correctly if they will display at all (but yes, the subtitltes should be there).

I did update the fw to 2.20. The problem with 2.20 is that mp4 files streamed over a media server sputter and I have this problem too. However, the mp4 files copied locally to the hard disk of PS3 play fine. I copied the file to hard disk so I should not be effected by the 2.20 update.

I have the same problem.. I am running version 2.43

I am using YAMB/MP4Box to add subtitles to an MP4 file.

On VLC, I can select the subtitle and get it working fine but when I play that file on PS3 (either from a USB drive or locally on the HD) I can't get any subtitle, I only get a message saying "There are no subtitle options available".

Can someone please help ??

I have the same problem here!! I have already firmware 2.80 but I can't display mp4 subtitles. Is there a way to do this? I use YAMB to include the subtitles in the mp4 file.

Can someone help us please? 

I have search the forums but so far haven't found any clue on this.

It must be how you're encoding them then because I've just done two of my movies in mp4 with subs and the PS3 plays it just fine.  I do use handbrake when encoding my movies.

HI ACtripxl.. how r u embedding the subtitle files in the mp4 video? what software do you use? I tried it using AVIAddXsubs. But I still cant see the subtitles in PS3. Please let me know how you do it.

the problem is u can see movies with subtitles (.srt files) thru PS3 when u use yamb or alike programs to burn those subtitles over AVI files, .mp4 files (only to wiev them thru PC), even when u convert those subtitled AVI s to .mp4 files, but when it comes to burn subtitles over an existing .mp4 file (we don t want to loose quality as those .mp4 files are coming with 5.1 audio and high resolution features nowadays) u can again watch them thru u r PC but not thru your PS3.

and we need PS3 to stream to your high resolution TV set.

so are there any solutions to that one or is it still SONY to come up with a solution for us?

how are you encoding your mp4 in handbrake, i have a video that has duel audio in mp4, on VLC you can select to show subs and it works, but when on ps3, nothing happens apart from the error message.

are you hardcoding the subs or are they soft subs where you can click to view them on and off?????

also what Srt Char Code are you using in Handbrake???
