That's not entirely true.  You need to obtain permission from the provider of the phone to root, if the phone is not paid off (i.e., you got it at a discount with a contract).

Acording to the EFF you only need permission to unlock (this is not the same as rooting or jailbreaking) a phone.

I dont care whats illegal. When I buy a phone it is mine not the provider's.

i cant believe there are people who are using un-rooted Androids. the sky is practically the limit with what you can do when its rooted.
