Last time I checked online play was free almost everywhere.
Wii = Free
PS3 = Free
Xbox 360 = NOT FREE?!

The only games people should have to pay for are MMORPGS because of the massiveness of it. Do you think Sony and Nintendo will make Microsoft get the message and maybe not charge for Live when they make the next Box?

Actually, SONY's onlilne network is not as free as you think it is, nor is the Wii.  It's free for the end user of the game, but it is not free for the developers nor the publishing firm for the games that are online.  Maintaining a series of servers for online content takes manpower, manpower demands money, and money is taken from a limited budget, and budget is supplied from the sales generated by projects.  Games have a certain threshold where sales of the title no longer generate enough profit to warrant the company to maintain and keep a server, as such happens to most PC multiplayer games who servers get shut down as the title is no longer sold in the retail market.  MMO's can be the most hard hit in this situation if the user base slowly dwindles down to a point that the company can not keep at a break even point and goes into the red.  The only answer is to either hike the monthly fee to the end users which speeds up declining user intrests, fire some employees to readjust the budget's break even point, or (worse) shut down the master server and all acompaning servers to the game and move onto new titles.

There are rumblings of rumors that some studios may slap a monthly fee onto their multiplayer side of games in the future to cover server costs or rely on *gasp* in-game ads to cover budget problems.

As for the ps3 and Wii, it's only free as long as you purchase completely nothing from either the Playstation Store or the Vitural Console section.  One way or another you're paying for your services, either though the games you buy or though a monthly fee.

On a side note, Xbox Live does have some features that is found lacking in the PSN (hopefully firmware updates changes this) especialy when it comes to VoIP and cross-game communication.  Running servers internationaly is costly as is, and a standard fee is nothing new as a business model.  Dreamcast's Sega.net had a monthly fee and the Super Nintendo and Sega Gensis modems both had fees.

that's a tough call, but it still isn't worth it. It should be free.

Why should it be free? Are the songs on Itunes free? Don't you have to pay for satellite radio as opposed to regular radio? Isn't that worth it?

It's $4 a month. I could see if it was like $10, but for $4 you really can't complain. You could go free, but looks whta that gives us: games that use different buddy lists, un-unified online or clunky number systems

Microsoft has enough success dude. Their system is ensured... if they made Live free they could really dominate.

For all they give you, it's definetly worth the price. They could dominate, but so could Sony if they lowered the PS3 price. Looks like it isn't going to happen, though

I know none of it's going to happen. But the 360 basically sells itself with a big "Halo 3" poster. Free online would be like the icing on the cake.

Why would you expect the online to be free?

He's just annoyed that can't get $4 a month.
I not hard you know.
If you went out and looked for pennys or cents on the floor for a month, you would get most of the money. But having pocket money or a job, you have well over a month.

Yup, it is complete bull crap that you have to pay.

They need to realize that there price tag and the fact that you need a credit/ debit card will drive people away.

Live penetration is much larger on X360 than Xbox already.  You can take that view if you like, but the numbers say otherwise.  Fifty Dollars a year is chump change.  Fifty Dollars over an entire year is something you honestly never even notice.  Considering it grants you full access to hands down the best online service of the three consoles, it's not a bad deal.  Like the old saying goes, you get what you pay for.  Sure, you don't have to buy the microtransactions items on PSN.  But when your buddies do and are using weapons and maps you don't have because you think oline should be totally free, then what?  No matter which service you use, you'll pay, in some way.

Exactly. It is one of the best services out there. And only 50-60 bucks a year is nothing. It also keeps a certain amount of kids out with the restriction of needed a CC and to pay up. However, nowadays more a more are logging on.

It's THE best service, not one of them

I dont think it should be free. I mean it is better WAY better then Ps3 and Wii. Maybe the price should go down to maybe 35 to 40 a year or something but it really isnt that big of a deal. The 50 a year that we already pay is less then 4 dollars a month.

No it shouldn't.

You would rather pay? Eh, it's your wallet.

They are not saying they would rather pay. They are saying it shouldnt be for the great service they get. You are just stupid cause you are crying about less then 4 dollars a month. Im sure everyone would like it to be free I wouldnt mind but for the great service we get we dont mind paying like 3.75 a month. Your just **bleep**in really cheap.

The Xbox should have free live. The 360 should not have free live. I just got an old xbox, and dont wanna pay to get online on an 8 year old system.
