I have a lot of neat little programs for XP. Will they work on Vista, or should I keep XP?

Some will, some won't. Programs that are very XP-specific such as system tweaks, skins and other programs related to the GUI, etc... won't work.

Photoshop, Word processing, web browsing, media players and games almost always work on Vista RC1 for me. However, they're quite a bit slower...

I wish I could just buy DX10, and leave Vista. I want XP, and not Vista. When I do get Vista, I'm disabling all the visuals that make it all "nice" it will just make it lag....

Vista is basically all of the bad things about XP mixed in with some of the neat graphics from Mac OS X (even some of the icons are stolen right ouf of Mac OS X), with a ton of DRM thrown into the mix.

Avoid Vista. Theres no reason to throw money away on it and use something that is worse than what you have now but with prettier graphics. If you want a pretty new UI, go buy Window Blinds.

I tried RC1, hated it.  Mostly due to the forementioned lag.  I have a AMD 3500 64 bit, and it runs like a dinosaur.  Even with 1 Gig of ram.  It was nothing more than a pretty version of XP with some extra bells and whistles.
