Why should I subscribe to an MMO?

9 replies 122 views Edited Mar 4, 2014

Hello, everyone!

I got to play the Final Fantasy 14 PS4 Beta. I really liked it, it was very fun (I actually spent more time in the FFXIV Beta than I did in the Titanfall PC Beta). However, I will not buy it.

There's only 1 reason I'm not buying it: The mandatory $15 per month subscription, on top of the $30 up-front fee, is just not worth it to me. I know most MMOs use this model, but it makes me wonder why people buy it.

In the case of FFXIV, there's not even much in terms of gameplay that's very MMO about it. Other than FATEs and the player-driven market, the game can be played almost entirely alone, with other players just doing their own things.

The biggest problem with subscriptions is that you never own the game. You're basically just prolonging your rent indefinitely.

Can someone convince me otherwise? How can I justify the $15 a month price tag? Sure, no microtransactions is great, but $180 a year doesn't sound much better...

Well, Final Fantasy 11 is over a decade old, and they still charge for that I think.

I know the servers cost money, but a single $60 purchase from everyone isn't enough? Even CoD gets by (and then some) on $60 a year.

Oh? Then again that's on PS 2 and don't think they'll ever update....

Also since that is FF it may or may never go free but then again anything can happen!!

If you find it fun, entertaining, and you can afford it, why not go for it?

IMO though, I can't deal with monthly fees. I already pay enough for PS Plus to just get online.

If the game doesn't convince you to spend $15 a month, then knowone else should be able to either.

there is no reason why you should subscribe to MMOs. there are plenty of free ones such as Smite, Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 that have lifespans of thousands of hours, if not more.

Yeah, why should you?

I got a problem with monthly fees also. You should't  subscribe to an MMO if you feel it's not worth it.
