Why Is It Bad To Sleep On Your Stomach?

7 replies 235 views Edited Sep 13, 2007
I read somewhere that it was bad.  I sleep on my stomach a lot.  I just wanted to know why it was bad?  Is it because you're compressing your rib cage or something?

Maybe it's just bad for pregnant people.

That may be. It may also be uncomfortable. I've done that a few times and my chest hurt.

Sleeping on your stomach twists the neck, distorts the pelvis, and results in excessive strain on the joints, muscles and nerves of your neck and lower spine.  For most people, side sleeping, with the knees partially flexed to reduce strain on the lower spinal muscles, is preferable. The arms should be kept below the shoulders to avoid compressing nerves and blood vessels that feed the arms and hands.  Back sleeping is acceptable if you use a supportive pillow for your neck.

For men it can lead to a testicular torsion.  That's a pretty good reason to sleep on your back I'd say.

That would explain a  few....hehe, just joking. I sleep in about every position there is. On my back, side, stomach, cross-legged, arm head rest, standing up, etc. What can I say, I like to sleep.
