Which language to learn/take for Uni?

13 replies 44 views Edited Mar 29, 2012

Hello all! Hopefully you can give me some insight and help.

For starters, I'd like to mention that I love languages, I love them all. Well, I do dislike SOME languages, but I won't list them hear for fear of offending native speakers of said languages. So really, which language isn't that big of an issue. However, for Uni, I have a large selection of languages to choose from.

My major is either going to be Computer Science (focusing on Graphic Programming and Game Design as well) with a minor in Web Design.

However, one of those languages include Chinese (Mandarin), however, I'd rather learn Asian languages by myself since I find it much more useful to learn them through self study rather than school, since most classes only teach the business/tourist sect of it here.

I put up a poll, basically I have these languages to choose from:

Spanish, French, Italian, Latin, Ancient Greek, Russian, German, and Hebrew.

This is going to be my chance to be able to speak a language rather well other than English. (And I don't like English all that much to be honest)

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, I live in the US by the way, so even if the language is in Europe mainly, I don't mind at all <3

I liked Latin when I studied it.  It was very hard, but also rewarding.  Latin is the origin of a lot of western European languages and just made Spanish too easy when I tried learning it.  From a practical stand point Spanish would be the most beneficial language to learn due to the demographics of the U.S. and how many countries speak a form of it.  German wouldn't hurt either because a lot of global companies do business with the people in Germany.  I would think that more doors will be opened to you if you speak conversational German.

If I were you I would choose Spanish. Heck, even I want to learn Spanish and I'm European. ( I'm Finn btw and we're forced to study Swedish WHYY!?? )

Sadly they don't have Portuguese, neither Brazilian or European, at my University.

I know this. All my friends that speak it are from Brazil. I was just saying to the previous response that it's not offered, neither variety.

I would be torn between German and Russian. If you don’t like English then go with Russian!

On a serious note, take whichever language(s) you are interested in.
