UltraViolet! Digital Media Revolution!

UltraViolet Media

---------------------------------------------------------------

More and more I've been seeing DVDs and BluRay Disks with the little UltraViolet insert that allows you to download a corresponding digital copy. I didn't exactly know what UV was so I went to the website and had a look around. Some of the major studios and dealers have joined in an alliance to form a network that allows users to purchase the rights to their DVD or BluRay. I don't know about you, but I like this because at one point it seemed like media makers were trying to say - 'you purchased the disk not the right to rip it!' Personally as a consumer I felt this was the wrong way to go, but I'm really pleased that this alliance has come to be. This is a small step toward media companies actually addressing the issue of digital media rather than saying its just plain illegal! I'm sure there will be more steps and more alliances over the years, but I'm pleased that Sony has taken part in the first steps toward consumer vs studio rights.

The only possible down sides I see at the moment are:

  • No competition, but this is tempered with the fact that this is an alliance and that there are so many rental/share sites out there.
  • International Media laws - this could impede some people from getting the full benefit of the alliance
  • Devices - So far I've had no problem with UV devices, but this could be a problem IF UV excludes certain devices or OS systems (such as Linux).

So what do you think about this? Any positives/negatives? Experiences?

This is a good step for the Entertainment industry. You are correct that the "this is illegal" approach to pirating is foolish and ineffective. It is comforting to see the a different avenue being explored. The internet has opened a sort of Pandora's Box, one which may prove impossible to close. In order for the Entertainment industry to continue to thrive they will need to change with the times. This new UV technology seems to be just that.
