Thinking about switching....

34 replies 30 views Edited Jun 19, 2012

I had these thoughts about getting an Xbox 360 but the red ring of death made me purchase a ps3. To tell you the truth, i've been disappointed thus far. Ratchet & Clank has been the only sweet spot.

What next generation of consoles will be the best to get? A ps4, Wii U, or the Xbox 720?

Why so many defects in these machines?

Together with my wife we started a lan center in 2010. Basically we are an internet cafe and arcade without the quarters. I also do console repairs every thing from YLOD, RROD, to disc drive replacement, fan replacements/upgrades, and cleaning. It's amazing how many people have problems with both PS3 and 360...the wii is the most dependable of all the consoles but only has Mario. Metriod, and Zelda as far as REAL games go.

Both systems have their issues.

The design of the first gen PS3 and 360 was BAD. The 360 restricted air flow across the GPU that they placed UNDER the DVD drive. The PS3 put the motherboard UNDER the power supply. Both used cheap thermal paste to conduct the heat to their heat sinks.

The "slim" models are much better but still have certain problems. The DVD and Blu ray drives can be damaged by everything. I see slim 360's that the drive has jumped track mostly because you can put a little downward pressure on the ejected drive and it just pops out of line. The PS3 Blue ray drive can have all sorts of problems for quarters to taking in too many discs.

A lot of these problems can be avoided by the owner. Proper air flow around the systems, keeping the kids away from the disc trays, extra fans, and cleaning the dust from around the system regularly can all extend the life of the console. The funny thing is I never had issues with my Sega, NES, SNES, or any of the older systems. The issue is really that the new consoles are very basic PC's. The average person does not maintain their console at all.

So no matter which system you have or you go to chances are at some point while you own it you will have a problem with it.

I've seen a lot of old PS3's and 360's and I've seen several new slim models on both sides as well. You would think for $250 to $400 you would get a little quality however they don't make ANYTHING like they used to.

I'll be getting both next gen consoles because I want to experience the next gen version of gaming and I can afford it. I still have my original 360 from 2007( I have a newer model from last year that I game on ) and I still have my original 80 gig ps3 from 2008. The rrod shouldn't stop anybody from gaming on the 360...lol
