Here's a fascinating idea for the Playstation 4 - taking in the direction of ocmputers. Is that what Sony has planned? It's possible. Let's assume it uses an AMD FX 8 core processor, with 2 instruction pipelines, 2 SIMD 128-bit units, 2 ALUs, 2 load-store units, 1 MB of L2 cache, and 1 MB of L3 cache, per core. Out of the box, at 3.9 ghz, it will have 249.6 gflops of SIMD performance, not including double-precision floating-point performance. It may also have an AMD/ATI graphics processor running at 1.1 ghz, with 2 GB of GDDR5 RAM, 1280 SIMD units, and 153.6 Gbytes/second memory bandwidth. It will be capable of playing most PC software right out of the box. There may be a consumer demand for office applications. After all - it's a very capable computer. What are the chances of seeing Microsoft Office on there? Database server software to run enterprise servers on the Playstation 4 may be possible. I expect a lot of computer software to be ported over to the Playstation 4. Especially computer games. Mouse and keyboard support out-of-the-box is another possibility.
This system will be easily capable of running 1080p movies of course. It can probably run 4 simultaneous 1080p movies actually. Modular/easily replaceable blu-ray drives are therefore a high possibility. An optional furniture ensemble for holding the mouse and keyboard may be necessary - such as for a TV dinner, as most people don't have accomodations for that on their home entertainment system. A wide range of peripherals from 3rd parties may be possible, such as cameras, microphones, and printers/scanners. A $400 price point will be a good bargain, considering it's a full-fledged computer system.
I reckon that Nintendo Wii U, and Microsoft's Xbox 3, will easily be driven out of business, as consumers flock to the possibility of a comptuer-centric console. Out-of-the-box support for PC software is certainly going to attract mass 3rd party support as well - which will help it considerably.
