Sony losing mad loot on each PS3

51 replies 1 views Edited Nov 16, 2006
Well, according to this....Sony is losing about $240 for each premium console sold, and more than $300 for each 20GB console sold.

Microsoft is losing $75 for each 360 sold....and Nintendo isn't losing anything.

We all knew Sony was dropping a fair bit of cash on each PS3 sold, but we suppose we got a bit too hung up on the resultant pricetags -- the notorious $499 and $599 SKUs-- to give the actual losses much of a thought. Well, worry not Sony, iSuppli's got your back. Turns out Sony will be losing change to the tune of $241.35 for every "premium" (WiFi and 60GB HDD) console, and a whoppin' $306.85 for the bargain-basement 20 gigger. In comparison, Microsoft loses $75.70 per 360 it sells, while Nintendo is laughing all the way to the bank with a profit per Wii sold. Just in case you missed it the first time around, or fell off your chair and forgot what you were reading about: Sony will lose the equivalent (or more) to the retail price of a competing console every time a cash register rings up a PS3 sale this holiday. We suppose it's for the best, then, that Sony won't have a whole lot of 'em to hand out, since we're sure Sony's own costs will start to drop as production really ramps up next year. Be sure to peep the read link for a full breakdown of the costs.

But, for every PS3 they don't sell, they lose $900.

Wow...I just almost defended Sony.

Now just imagine, based on those figures, how much more Sony might lose if the PS3's purchased tonight at midnight start overheating and breaking down and must be returned for a refund.  Ouchies.

That is what they want you to believe. They want it to seem like you are getting a good deal. But I tell you, Sony is MAKING money on these PS3s. They have the best marketing strategy ever. Make few PS3s, and make people hungry for them. That is what made the slim ps2 so popular.

I disagree, becuase the hardware in the PS3 is very expensive.  Blu-Ray, anyone?  Duo-Quad core processor? So it does make sense that Sony is losing money on each PS3 sold.

I never said they arent losing money on EACH console. They are, but they arent losing money overall. No way.

And just think. The same ppl that are buying those consoles, are the same ppl that are turning around, and selling them on ebay for $1,000 of dollars. Wow. Ppl care more about making money, than gaming...
