Playstation 4 vs. $3000 PC

20 replies 691 views Edited Feb 8, 2013

The main components to compare are the video cards.  Let's take a look at an ATI HD 6990, with a retail price of $800, and 4 GB of DDR5 RAM.

http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/amd-radeon-hd-6000/hd-6990/pages/amd-radeon-hd-6990-...

ATI HD 6990 - 320 GB/s of memory bandwidth

Playstation 4 - 270 GB/s

Seems like PC wins doesn't it?  In fact, the 320 GB/s of memory which the HD 6990 is DDR SDRAM.  Meaning it is DRAM.  The actual speed of it, is in fact, half of what it says.  Why - the data reads are destructive.  Thus - a z-buffer read, has to be written back either way.  This increases the bandwidth tremendously.

Actual throughtput of the HD 6990 - 160 GB/s

Playstation 4 features 108 GB/s of SRAM.  Non-destructive reads.

Actual throughput of Playstation - 108 GB/s + 85 GB/s (main memory DRAM) - 193 GB/s

There you go - the Playstation 4 has way more memory bandwidth then a $3000 PC with an HD 6990.  Pretty remarkable.  Thus - the PC will not even be able to theoretically be able to hold its own - regardless of price - at Playstation 4 launch.  This IMMENSE memory bandwidth will allow 1920 x 1080 to be done effortlessly.  Even at 60 fps, with AA, and even doubled with two 1920 x 1080 screens being rendered simultaneously.

Ok, but a year or so after PS4 releases, PC will skip ahead...

Consoles will never, at least in the near future, be able to keep up with PC's post-launch.

Sony loses money on each console they sell. They make money through those $60 games, and other paid-for online content.

Gojet-64 is now Encvell. (Gojet-64 is now only used for older games and Vita)
Back up your PS3's and PS4's hard drives!

They make  money on the console til they break even  on then, also selling software eases things but at same times you have to sell  console to make consoles not sell  software to make  hardware. Becuase hardware always come 1st,  this is not  what come 1st the chicken or the egg debate..

The hardware always comes first  and also  sony has broken even on ps3  console like 2-4 yrs ago almost. They are no losing any money on console sold any more.  Only console doing that is  xbox360

Actually - $400.  At $400 - it will be 20 years more advanced then the PC!  A remarkable technological achievement.

Actually it's more like they give away the consoles for free, and make money on the software.

The Xbox 360 has been profitable since 2008: http://www.dailytech.com/Xbox+360+to+be+Profitable+by+2008/article7173.htm

Th PS3 has been profitable since 2010: http://www.edge-online.com/news/sony-ps3-now-profitable/

Explain to us how you come up with 20 years with a $400 price point...

That doesn't make any sense. The profits come from the sale of software and accessories. The only subsidy that I know of is the Xbox 360 $99 deal, where you have to pay $15 a month for 2 years...
