Although I don't have any relatives, my history professor from last semester shared his story about his dad in the Battle of the Bulge. His dad was a supply officer and his squad came under some heavy artillery. He eventually got knocked out by some shrapnel and was taken to the hospital. When he woke up, he asked what had happened but the medical staff around him couldn't stop laughing. The reason as to why they were was because the piece of shrapnel that had taken him out wasn't from artillery, but from an exploding piece of a toilet from the house that he was standing next to. My professor said his dad could have gotten a Purple Heart for it, but he refused it since he would be too embarassed to tell the story behind it if anyone asked.

One of my grandfathers served in the US Navy during WW2.  I have a lot of relatives that fought for Germany in WW2, but most of them are dead.
