On-chip SRAM on the Playstation 4's GPU

3 replies 258 views Edited Jan 23, 2013

The Xbox360 and Playstation 2 use  Embedded DRAM for on-chip frame and z-buffers, but the problem with the DRAM is that it is that it is far slower.  Just 1 transistor per cell, as opposed to 6 for SRAM.  Also - reads are destructive - mean after 1 read, the data is erased.  Thus for anti-aliasing, a big inefficiency.  You read the 8 pixels - blend them - then write those pixels back, taking up twice the bandwidth.  Also - it has a far higher latency then SRAM.  The end result - it is not sufficient for real-time rendering by the GPU.

What about SRAM?  Data is not erased.  It is permanent.  I expect to see on Playstation 4:

8.29 MB 1920x1080 resolution 4T SRAM framebuffer -  265,420,800 transistors

8.29 MB 1920x1080 resolution 4T SRAM z-buffer - 265,420,800 transistors

Considering that a current top of the line GPU has 1 billion transistors easily - that's not that much.  Half therefore, would go the cache.

If Playstation 4's GPU has 16.58 MB of on-board SRAM, it'll be like having a workstation power your game console.  It'll be a pixel pushing monster!  Dual 1920x1080P screens, running at 60fps, with staggering quality.  This is going to be good.

This is all nice and well but being having the most power under the hood means nothing without software. This sordid truth has been proven so many times before.
