Nintendo Redesigns the Wii, No GC BC

18 replies 836 views Edited Aug 17, 2011

Nintendo has cut backwards compatibility from the just-announced Wii redesign.

The new-look Wii redesign will no longer support GameCube games or hardware, the company has confirmed.

This means gamers will be unable to use GameCube pads when playing Wii games such as Mario Kart Wii or Smash Bros. Brawl.

Has Nintendo slimmed the Wii simply by chopping off its GameCube controller and memory card slots, currently hidden away under the console's top flap?

Gamers who want the new Wii and still wish to avoid motion controls must upgrade to the Wii's equivalent pad, the Classic Controller.

I don't see why nintendo is doing this. The WIIU is coming out in 2012 and for them to do this makes no sense.

It does seem kind of late to do this but whatever.  It would have made more sense to do this a year ago but getting it out just before Christmas the year before the Wii U?  I figure most people would just wait it out for the Wii U.

From what I can see, the unit itself doesn't look any different, other than the fact it's pictured horizontally, without the stand. That said, I don't see the point at this particular time either... Unless they're gearing up for a price cut.

This is a Sony site. Mentioning the competition?

I'm not a fanboy but this shouldn't be allowed

Those aren't scaled properly but essentially, seems to be the case.  No GC functionality and meant to be displayed horizontal instead of vertical.  As for a price drop, they're either stripping out the GC stuff to save money (?; with the 3DS cut, maybe?) or they're doing the aforementioned and packing in another game or two as usual while making more money without having to cut the price.

Off-topic has always been fine for other platform discussions.

This isn't overly surprising, since GC games and accessories aren't being sold anymore. There will always be tons of BC Wiis in the marketplace for anyone needing that ability...

That or you can wait for the titles to come to Virtual Console on the Wii U.

One thing I don't understand is why the Wii U doesn't upconvert the resolution of Wii titles. Both the X360 and PS3 can upconvert the resolution of their previous gen titles, there should be no reason that the Wii U can't do it too...
