My car is stuck in park. :/

19 replies 1 views Edited Jan 22, 2007
Yep, stuck in park. I think I might have broken my thumb trying to shift into drive. I'm assuming it's from the cold, this has never happened before, and the temperature gauge takes about 25 minutes to get to the normal range. I don't know what to do about it though, is this a common problem because I've never heard of it happening before, cold or otherwise.

Something is wrong with your transmission.

Yeah you got some serious tranny problems. I'd say just take it to a garage, but if it is your transmission its going to cost you a lot of $ to get to fixed.

Why would you leave your car in a park?

You're probably driving a Ford.  There is a transmission lockout that is tied to the brakes.  You have to put your foot on the brake to get it out of Park, as a safety feature.  This works with a contact switch on the brake pedal.  You can usually release the contact switch manually but you generally have to get out of the seat to find it.

If this is the problem, a transmission place can fix it for you very cheaply.
