Something is wrong with your transmission.

Yeah you got some serious tranny problems. I'd say just take it to a garage, but if it is your transmission its going to cost you a lot of $ to get to fixed.

when i was living with my father he had an old van and you could shift from P to R and D without touching the brakes. my father would drive in reverse slow and shift to drive and i thought that was cool. so when i got my lisence i wanted to try. so i was doing it from time to time and it was fun but one day i felt like pushing it to the limit. so i was going 10 mph in reverse and i jamed it into D without getting of the gas and as soon as i put it into D i mashed the gas pedel to the floor and tore the tranny off the engine. it was gonna cost $1500 to fix it so my father threw the van away.

You're right DrGadget, I do have a Ford. After about a half hour of fussing with it, we called someone to tow it to the shop, but the guy got it to shift into drive on his second try, so I drove it there. They said there's nothing they can do about it since it's working now, but it's probably the brake light cable, and could be due to the cold. I'm not an idiot, I know that a lot of cars require your foot on the brake to shift out of park and I do it out of habit anyway because we live on a hill and I don't want my car to start rolling. So stupidity is not the problem here. I guess I just have to pray that it doesn't happen again, and if it does, get it towed without trying to fix it myself.

If its super uber cold outside, the transmission oil could have frozen into slush or solid, it sounds stupid but its a porblem if its like -30C or colder its possible.
If not, make sure you have your foot on the brake.

It's automatic...

And it's not -30 degrees out...it's about +30 degrees. The problem started yesterday morning, it snowed yesterday, and now it got stuck again today. I got an oil change and all that when I went to Goodyear earlier today, so the fluids shouldn't be a problem.
