Lowering CPU usage...

14 replies 1 views Edited Dec 5, 2006
My PC has been going really slow lately, and I suspect CPU usage is the problem, as even when nothing is open it's over 25-30.  I have about 46 processes running, so should I get rid of some?  What are some other tips?  I will probably disc scan and defrag soon too...

Mine seems to do the same.  I can run it fine for about an hour+ sometimes but after that, it gets really, really slow and it's usually the same programs that were running an hour beforehand.

You don't need your virus software running real time.

start>run Then type in msconfig. Go to startup and start unchecking things. Then go over to services and uncheck any NON MICROSOFT programs that you think you don't need. hit apply then restart. When the system configuration popup comes up, uncheck it.

See if that helps

Get rid of your desktop icons. You don't need them. It takes 10 seconds to find a program you need through the start menu. Just leave the recycle bin.

May I ask the speed of your computer ?

Norton and firefox are on there also, but I know about all that stuff... not anything about the previous though.  There are alot with over 2000kb though...

You need explorer...don't close that, same with svchost....the other two you should be able to stop.
Run a virus and spyware/malware scan and see if it picks up anything.  If not, open up Start>Run> then type in "msconfig" and stop all unnecessary programs from starting with your computer.

DAYUM.  All of it (except explorer) involves Norton Smiley IndifferentSmiley Indifferent.  Time to get AVG/ Kapersky.

Well, if they aren't for the SYSTEM, then just end them.

Yeah, bring up task manager to see whats eating it up, and you can end almost any process that the computer doesn't mark as "critical" EXCEPT for "explorer.exe." That is windws explorer, and it includes your start menu so all that stuff will be gone. Look for things taking up CPU and RAM. Do not close anything that's under 5% of your RAM or 1% of CPU. (that's my general rule of thumb)
PM me if you can decrypt the following:

Your hint is: "12345" (You NEED this to get it)
Another hint: Encryptor is spelled with a -or, not -er
Another: Where do you go when you need help? Why would I tell you how to spell "encryptor?"
And another: You won't have to leave this browser window to figure it out
Finally someone got it: Congrats to SecretAgentMan on 7/13/07

You can stop just about any program except explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe, and you should probably leave all of your anti virus jazz. (as far as things named Owner)
