How do I prevent my laptop from overheating?

I have an HP Envy M6-1205dx laptop. The thing constantly overheats and shuts down if it's performing too many high performance tasks even if it's on a hard surface. I've heard people recommend getting a cooling pad, but would upgrading any of the actual parts (like the fan) help keep the temperature down? It has a typical 5400 rpm HDD. If I upgraded it to a SSD (which apparently run cooler), would that help keep the temperature down? I know how to assemble computers so I'm trying to figure out the best way I could make this thing run cooler.

Here are the tech specs to give you an idea what I'm working with:

Maybe. But a cooling pad is truly a saving grace. Got one for my Gateway, thing overheated  somewhat due to some programs that were on it (some bloatware that Gateway had on it originally) and a sleep mode that was on default. Once I got a cooling pad, it helped and once the issues were taken care of, it helped as well.

Your laptops cooling system is likely caked up with dust.

If its still under warranty, send it to get repaired for the issue.

If its not under waranty, be careful to take it apart and clean out the heatsink/fan's.

This usually solves overheating issues.

But the heat issue is mostly due to having an APU which has the CPU and GPU on one chip and without proper ventilation they will overheat.

Summary:
Clean it free of dust
Get a cooling pad.

The alternative to a cooling pad:
Laying it on a flat surface isn't going to help much because there is not enough space from the rubber feet to have a decent amount of airflow going to the fan.
What you can do is elevate the laptop an inch or more so that it gets enough air for the fan to suck in cool air underneath.

My brother has a laptop with a similar issue, since his laptop only has ONE fan, so without getting enough airflow into the fan, he fan just gets louder and louder and it overheats.

If you ever look for a replacement laptop, look into gaming laptops, like from Sager Notebook which have excellent cooling.
