Help deleting Windows system files; SAFE MODE didn't help :(

7 replies 66 views Edited Dec 3, 2006
I am running out of space on my HDD, and I realized that the last time I reinstalled XP the system restoration disk that came with my laptop created a backup of my old Windows folder.  The backup takes 8.25 GB of space, and Windows won't let me delete the files even though they are not being used.  Is there some way for me to delete them? I need the space, otherwise I am going to have to reformat the partition I keep Ubuntu on

Update - Safe Mode gave me the same error when I tried to delete the files

Boot into another operating system (maybe a Linux live one) and delete the files from there.

Although, most linux distros don't recognize NTFS parttitions. I guess safe mode would be your best bet. This happened to me, last time, so I just reformatted that whole partition. Most of my drive is going to be dedicated to Linux anyway.

I'll try safe mode, Ubuntu doesn't recognize my Windows partition and I don't have the time right now to mount it.

I can't get into safe mode, the help section in XP says hit F8 during startup.  When I hit F8 Windows stops starting up and I have to manually restart
