Computer minus case

9 replies 1 views Edited Nov 23, 2006
As some of you may know, my case is somehow shorting out my motherboard, so when I put it in the case, it won't start up. I took it out of the case and it works just fine.

What are the risks in just keeping the motherboard on a plastic static-proof bag on my desk?

I can keep general hazards (liquid, dust, etc.) away but I'm also wondering: what's a good way I can make a home-made case to suit me until I figure out what's wrong with my real case? Are there requirements for where I need to have grounded material and where I can't?

Help is appreciated. Thanks.

It will be fine, just keep it cooled (fans).  Is the surface of your case bent?  It must be touching something it's not supposed to.

When it's in the case, does it begin to start up, or just, nothing?

Starts up for maybe half a second then shuts off. After that, I have to unplug it for several seconds to start it up again. It's not malware because it's not even making it to the OS and it doesn't apply when it's out of the case. It must be the case.

It doesn't look bent at all.

That's what it sounds like.  Just double check everything in the case, including the motherboard mounts (and the MB itself).  Might be easier to just put it in the case without power and check for any contact.  Make sure the I/O wires are plugged in correctly too.

also make sure your motherboard screws (the ones that keep it attached to the case) aren't screwed in too tight...i read somewhere that this happens sometimes.

Check if where you are mouting the mobo onto the case, the areas where the metal is raised for you to screw in, if there is any rubber or washer that you are supposed to put there. If you aren't putting anything there, that could be your problem
