Basically, any game can make you smarter. It all depends though. Some games can influence the choices you do in real life.
Puzzles. Oh yes, puzzles. Portal 2 for example made me feel a little bit smarter. It had me concentrating and wondering how to solve something, it also required patience.
First Person Shooters. Love them. FPS. Call of Duty..4, for example showed me that being a Sgt. in the miltiary is not a fun, easy, cool job. It made me realize that there are people doing what I'm doing in a video game, in real life.
Simulations. Virtual life. Simulation. The Sims 3, it made me realize that I can't slack off at work, or just simply afford an item. You have to start from a certain point in order to achieve what you want. School actually taught me this already, but the Sims 3 expanded it.
Does it make you smarter? Yes.
Depending on the game, sure.
Took the words right out of my mouth, if all you do is play mindless shooters how is that going to help in your dating life?

I hold it hostage to a fault

It makes me so frustrated on the daily
Bear with me as I lose my cool
I swear it's only momentary
