I think it has a lot to do with the size of the t.v. I don't think I would notice a difference on my little 26" hdtv

On any size TV over 27": yes.  Because there will be less jaggies in games at 1080p than 720p.

I know a lot about little things, yet very little about a lot of things.

from a normal TV watching distance, I'd say over 40" screen and you'll start to notice a difference

from up close, perhaps at 32" you'll start noticing

Yes.  If your TV is native 1080p then you will see a huge difference.  If your TV is native 720p you cannot display 1080p.  If your TV is 1080p native - you will be stretching the 720 horizontal lines of resolution over 1080 lines... think of it as your pc - most people still use 1024x768 resolution on a standard CRT - the images look crisp and clean - but when you downgrade to 800x600 - images appear blocky, edges aren't crisp - you can see the pixelation.  It is the same difference between 1080p and 720p - you're stretching a smaller image to fit on a larger screen thus giving you the look of "Legos".

There is a huge difference in the way images are rendered just between 1080i (interlaced, the whole screen is rendered a line at a time) and 1080p (progressive, the whole screen is rendered at once, hence no screen tearing)

####p holds better video quality for moving objects that you would normally see from an action movie or game since you will see no screen "tearing" (i.e. think of progressive scan as the "sync with monitor" on PC games) thus scynchronizing the rendering of each frame with the refresh rate of the monitor.  This negates "tears" that you see in an image while objects are moving.  They typical tear would be the top half of your screen showing frame X in the series of renders while the bottom half is showing the next frame - the image appears to be "torn"

Yes.  There's a huge difference.   However, it has a lot to do with the size and type of TV.
