Young Children and Video Games...

I find video games are become the board games of the past... I remember growing up and having family board game times and I'm seeing more often now family video game times! I have a 3 year old who loves playing LBP with me and he would if he was allowed probably play 24 hours a day already! I know with me I hardly let my son play since I see him already seeming to be addicted to them... What are other peoples thoughts when it comes to children and video games? What pros or cons do other people out there have when it comes to video games and children?

I started playing video games at 5 and I was allowed to play only 1-2 hours a day. I don't see the harm in it if you let your 3-year-old son play for short periods. Everyone gets addicted to video games, but young children shouldn't have too much tv time in my opinion.

Now for the pros and cons. LBP is a creative game since you can create levels and stuff. Cons would be if the gaming slips out of hands and kid becomes aggressive while playing ( Or when not allowed to play ).

Is all about the balance. When I was a kid, I used to play for 4-5 hours, but I didn't play all days of the week, some I went out with my friends and play football, and is kinda the same routine now (adding university). So it really doesnt matter how much he plays on a day, but if he is rejecting another social interactions to keep playing.

Well it's up to each parent to decide whats best for their kids but moderation over gaming time obviously should be the top overall concern for a parent. Also the type of games a kid is allowed to play is up to the parent but letting a 5 year old play Call of Duty is not a good idea imo...

LBP is a great came for a kid that age to play it will work his creative brain muscles more and he may even learn something from it, Thats the trick you need when giving your child a controller and a video game. Give them something they can learn from like puzzle games or what ever other learning games they may have out there for the PS3 4 year olds are very young and susceptible to just about anything so you dont want them playing GTA or something like that no no no no no no :smileytongue: *show me your bacon and i will show you mine* :smileyhappy:

As long as they spend adequate time with friends, family, and outside time (depending on area, weather, etc) then video gaming is an essential for children. Games build hand and eye coordination, interaction is so much better than just watching TV and imagination can run wild building up creativity in a child's mine. My son is 6 and loves all kinds of games, that are appropriate for him, and his creative ideas are amazing. He even has little critiques on what he doesn't like and everything. As long as your preteen isn't picking up very negative things from games out of his/her range then gaming is a great character builder.

Exactly. And, in my opinion, violent videogames are ok if they are not too graphic, of course every kid will be diferent and some can be more easily impresed.
