Italian researchers have begun excavating an ancient grave where the body of the model for the Mona Lisa may be buried.
The researchers found the grave in the underground of a dilapidated Florence convent. Digging started earlier this week.
Historical documents suggest Leonardo da Vinci's modeled his masterpiece on the wife of Florentine silk merchant, Lisa del Giocondo. Others believe the Mona Lisa was an imaginary figure.
The researchers say the body in the grave could clear up the mystery.
The chief archeologist says if they can find her skull, they will be able to reconstruct her face, using the latest technology.
