The 40g PS3 cannot play PS2 games, however it can in fact play PS1 games. As for the 20g, it is fully backward compatible.

   I hadn't read this thread or would have responded sooner.-M- and babyeater have stated as others that the 20gb,60gb,and 80gb are backward compatible.But from what I've read the 20 and 60 are the best at playing PS2 titles.Also as -M- stated all NFS info is copyrighted material as I found this out when my PS3 had to be return for warranty.You can save your settings and friend's list but most game info can't be.On the PS2 cards you have to configure your PS3 to read it.And it boggles the mind as to why Sony did the 40gb the way they have.Again from what I've read the 40 has less CPU capacity than the 20,60 or 80 gb versions.

I have the 80GB system and it has been compatable with every PS2 title I have tried (30+). My friend has the 60GB and has come across 2 PS2 titles out of this 30+ that it wouldn't play.

Tyrant... you should see if they work on your system... I doubt it... cuz from what I heard, tha 60 is the best at backwards compatibility... there is a ps2 system download thingy in the ps store... It has been there forever and is old... so maybe he needs to download it.... I downloaded it.. don't know what it's for... but I haven't had any problems with ps2 games (got a 60gig on november 17th... the day after my birthday )

What happened was my son was playing these 2 games on my system. Then one morning, while I was playing (probably Carbon) he wanted to play his games. So he went upstairs and put them in my friend's 60GB and they wouldn't play. Now I can't remember which 2 they were, but they were "E" rated for sure.

seriously tho, if you're ever wondering around in an EB Games, Gamestop, or Blockbuster, and come across a used version of Crash Bandicoot: Crash Team Racing (CTR), GRAB IT!  What a freakin blast.  It was a PS1 game, and surely you're familiar with the Crash Bandicoot series.?

this was the Crash Characters racing go karts....with heat seeking missiles, warp orbs, bowling bombs, nitro-meth molotov **bleep**tails, etc that you could use against your opponents.  You could play up to 4 players and the single player and career was a blast.  Every bit as addicting as Carbon has been.

Oh Yeah....it was rated "E".
