it depends on situation for me. Defending, i'd rather have someone with a mic. even if they are only spouting nonsense or a different language. if they're bleeding out i can see where their body is an assess that the enemy is in that location or coming from. It just makes defending that much easier. is it necessary? no. But it CAN be the crucial factor that leads to victory or defeat
example. In sabo when im PL. if we get pushed back to C, i have enough experience to know that more often than not, clans will try to push to the spawn points and trap us before we get back to defend. So what do i like to do? i like to keep in communication with all squads so that i know if a specific side is getting spawn camped. I want to be able to tell them to switch their spawn over so that they can hurry up and get into C. plus, its a lot harder to spawn camp a side with more than the usual 16 players spawning.
For attacking, if someone without a mic follows orders, i have no problem with them having no mic. i prefer them over someone who does have one but refuses to listen. If i need rocket launchers to down a turret and some grenaders and noob tubers to shell out the area, i dont need them to talk, i need them to do.

I can't use a mic, I'm a mute so getting one would be pointless. I still listen to orders. Just because I can't speak doesen't mean I can't listen to orders or res people. What really annoys me is people who can speak but don't get a mic. I've only had a couple of annoying mic moments where someone would not shut up and just kept saying the same thing over and over again, or the annoying kid (or adult) using every colourful word out there and the very loud child that insists on yelling out everything through his mic in another language consequently disallowing everyone else to give out orders and have general squad chat because no one can hear them over the kid!

What IM really mad about is that people havent figured out how to use the D-pad left commands correctly.
"Reinforcements, now!" - self explanatory, can also mean 'follow me'
"I need a medic!" - cant use this while youre down, so use it to show when youre going to pick someone up, so they know its coming.
"I need a pickup!" - either asking for a vehicle pickup or trying to give one
"I need repairs!"- self explanatory, but can also show that you are going to repair, especially if the FRAGO is gray. That way people can cover you?
It takes half a second, and gives a visual guide to your entire squad as to what youre doing. Ive played with a lot of smaller clans, especially on alts, and nowhere have I seen this. Usually when I hit one, people just start hitting them all randomly and continue to get redlined.
I think it comes down to a lack of awareness. It doesnt take a huge amount of teamwork to realize that running into a meatgrinder doesnt work, and sometimes there are holes in the defense. I play so many games where I can literally run into the objective and arm it without seeing any players, all the way from the spawn. Yet even if I hold it, the other side never captures it and I eventually die.
I dont get how so many people can play this game and die so much and not quit. It baffles me. I saw a card with 1300 hours and 5 grims today. How do you play that long and not get better?

Honestly when it comes to mics I'm more annoyed than finding any use for them. Personally when you sound like a 12 yr old with snot coming down your nose it's annoying. Not to mention people that don't really use it for anything.. I can just hear your tv which is irritating. There are some ups to having a mic. Instantly telling someone information you would have not been able to otherwise. However annoying me with random chit chat or your tv echo gets old. I prefer playing without a mic and for others to do the same. Sure the instant info from a few people is nice but it doesn't out weigh useless coughing, sniffing, tv echo, or chit chat I'm not interested in listening to. I've yet to actually find the fast info given from a mic to be more useful. Most the time I end up getting asked questions. If you don't know how to play I'm not to terribly interested in telling you either. Your playing online I'm assuming you have computer go look up info or figure it out. If you don't use a mic though don't play any part that it would be necessary but other than that no it's not really required. People will kick you for any reason. I've kicked people for having a mic. Acting like an idiot or having low scores. I'd just say if they boot you. You probably don't want to play with them anyways.

Since I can't talk I use those. However some people just ignore me because they think I pressed it for no reason.

I did not read all of this because its kind of a wall of text.
But you should join a clan that requires mics before you make that judgement. A lot of clans use mics very well, and without sounding like 12 year olds.
Of course youre going to have very little luck with randoms, in all regards. Not just mics.
Btw, if you block someone it mutes them.

I took 8 months off of FPS in general, came back to MAG, and noticed that no one had gotten better. Seriously? My first 500 hours were all just constant improvement, and while everyone has a different learning curve, I would hope that after a year or more of playing the game, the more average players would have gotten a little better, but not so.
