Hawk's annual GOTM thread: 2011 edition

1 replies 261 views Edited Dec 8, 2011

Intro) Well, it's that time of year again. Most of this years games have been released and it's time to reflect on which is the best and which is the worst. As some of you may know, I do an annual GOTY thread. But, what some of you may not be aware of is that I also do a GOTM thread before that. That's what this is. It's basically a summery of the best games of each month. It's really a way to prepare for the next step, which is the GOTY thread. Anyway, I encourage you all to think about whatver games that you bought this year and try to analyize them as best as possible. Because doing this will make your GOTY picks a lot easier.

Anyway, here are The rules.

1) When doing this please keep in mind that the GOTM format (see below) is used this for every month from January to November 2011. So, this will likely take some time. Please try to think carefully about your picks. As I said, this is something can be used for the GOTY picks later on. So, this thread is important.

2) All picks must be games that were released this year. Try to remember if you bought a particular game the month it was released. That's very important. But if you didn't and bought it in a later month or the year, then that's OK too. Just try to put in into the month it was originally released.

3) All picks must be PS3 only. You can pick PS3 versions of multiplatform games, but exclusives that are only on other system do not count. This is more the forum rules than mine, so please keep that in mind.

4) If you can't remember exactly which of the 2011 games that you bought in a particular month, it's OK. Just do a Top 20 or Top 50 list. Of course,  I prefer you use my GOTM format (as seen below), but I understand that remembering exact release dates maybe hard. So, that's an alternative format should you wish to use it. However, all picks listed must be PS3, PSN arcade, and PSP games that were released this year.

5)  Handheld picks can be from the PSP, but since the PSP had very few game releases this year, you can also select downloadable versions of PSP games or Mini's. And since it's hard to know the release date of those games, then you can name any Mini you happen to get. So mini's do count for handheld GOTM.

6) Finally, full games that you downloaded from the PS store don't count as picks, unless that's the only version that you bought. In other words, if you choose to download a new release rather than buy the blu-ray version, then that's fine. But if you have both format's of the same game, only list the disc version. Also, full PS3 games that are on the PS store are not arcade games. That's a seperate catagory as is DLC of the month. Which covers new map packs and expansions, but not arcade games. The good news is that you can still pick any Arcade game or DLC that you purchased, even if it wasn't released during that particular month. Becasue like with the Mini's, released dates of the content is not as important as when you finally bought it.

Ok, here's My GOTM format descriptions.

Month) example January:

PS3 GOTM: Description, Best GOTM for the PS3

Runner-up: In every catagory it's the 2nd best game. It can be a tie, but with no more than two PS3 games. However Runner-up's aren't manditory, so if you can't think of one, don't worry about it.

Handheld GOTM: Can be a PSP download or a mini.

Runner-up: If applicable

Multiplatform GOTM: 3rd best GOTM. It's a the PS3 version of a multiplatform game.

Runner-up: If applicable

Sequel of the month: The best game that happens to be a sequel. Since there's so many sequels that were released this year, this shouldn't be too hard of a catagory to pick.

Runner-up: If applicable

Port or remake of the month: Any game that was originally on another system but was ported over to the PS3 as an HD collection or PSN download.

Runner-up: If applicable

Retro GOTM: Sometimes this is a PS1 or PS2 classic, but it can be a downlaodable version of an old game. Like Sonic from the sega vintage collection.

Runner-up: If applicable

PSN arcade GOTM: Best arcade GOTM that's not DLC. It's basically a full arcade game.

Runner-up: If applicable

Downloadable content (DLC) of the month: The best map pack's or expansions of the month. Skin packs and costume pack don't count though.

Runner-up:

Feel free to add new catagories if you wish. Like:

Optional:

Biggest suprise of the month: A game that wasn't on your rader before, but that you got and were suprised was that good.

Or

Biggest dissapointment: A game that you bought that you thought was better, but truned out not to be. Basically, this is a kind way of lisitng the worst GOTM.

Finally, try to list some other games you may have bought in a givine month in the below catagory.

Also in a given month: Games:  Any game that you bought (even if it was released last year) in a particular month. This is any disc based or full downloadable game. It's organized this way.Arcade: List any extra arcade games that were not GOTM. Handheld: List any PSP download or Mini that you bought that was not GOTM. DLC: Any map pack or expansion pack. You can also list any costume packs, car packs, trak packs, time saver packs, or multiplayer skins here if you wish.

Ok, here's the blank format for you to copy and fill in. Again please think carefully and take your time.
