About the Realism of the Weight In Game

I'm going to try and explain something about the realism of slower aiming in the game here. I'll try and explain the weight and some basic physics. If I make a mistake someone can correct it but don't flame.

The M4 weighs only around 6 pounds. The M16 weighs about 8 pounds with an empty magazine. A gun like the M249 weighs about 16 pounds unloaded. A sniper rifle like the M40 weighs about 14.5 pounds and a rifle like the M107 weighs about 30 pounds. All those weights are with empty magazines. The guns in this game look to be bigger and of course heavier than an M16, to me they look between the M16 and M249.

They probably use a higher caliber round than we use today because of probable advances in body armor so a 32 round magazine would weigh probably around 1.5 - 3 pounds depending on what caliber they are actually using. Then Sev has two magazines taped to together so he can just flip it when one runs out so double that.

Then higher gravity on Helghan possibly could account for some extra weight. Anyways in total the weapon that Sev is using when you first start out probably weighs between 12 and 24 pounds. Realism isn't why the game feels more sluggish it's because the developers wanted it to be slower paced.

According to some basic principles of physics there is a thing called inertia. It's the tendency of an object at rest to want to stay it rest and an object in motion to want to stay in motion. The more mass an object has the more force it takes for it to accelerate. This would explain why the rifle in the game doesn't move at full speed immediately when you move the analog stick. So in reality the different weapons should accelerate and come to a stop at slightly different speeds when you're aiming them.

However it isn't possible to actually simulate holding a real weapon in a video game. It can come close but it will never be perfect. For example this game doesn't do a terrible job but it doesn't change based on the weapon that you have in hand. It also doesn't have the weapon sway at all (except for snipers but that's controlled by the sixaxis) which is probably good because it would add to the difficulty of aiming.

tl;dr: It doesn't matter why the developers decided to make the game more sluggish but it was their choice so either get over it or don't play the game.

Now hopefully people can stop saying that it's all because the game is realistic. I personally like the game the way it is but it isn't very close to reality it's still a just a video game. Please discuss this and give your input on how the developers could have made it better.

Well looks like some posts got deleted out of here...

hhhmmmmmm... I would say that they are any where near as big as a m249. that is a huge gun, I would say that it is slightly bigger then a m16. I do agree with you that the developers more then likely wanted it to be more of a slower aim because of the guns.

btw what made you change your mind about the game controls?

Really cool name & sig.

And youre right, people say that the physics engine is stupid, but it's not it one of the smartest things besides the A.I in the game.

Re: About the Realism of the Weight In Game

I assumed that the slight movement prior to the acceleration was the character only moving the gun, but the speed up was in regards to the character shifting most of his body.

i would say there is a sese of realism to it. rainbow 6 vegas feels almost the same, with the slow aiming. it takes getting used to, but it doesnt take the fun away

its the example i give many times..the sluggy-ness is there when ur using the bazooka and also when ur using a KNIFE! ?

they didnt take into consideration what that effect would do to the gameplay and how it would be a battle between u the controller and the weight sluggyness adjustmetns and the other player vise vera... thats why sum think that 60% of the MP will be more PRAY N SPRAY (or spray n pray) idk ..but ye... lets see what the final verdict is by GG...we were said to have a hearing by today but nohting from MOTHER H yet...lets hope for this week sitll....

Re: About the Realism of the Weight In Game

''Its been confirmed that the lag / delay / sluggishness of the control, is, infact part of the game design. Its supposed to simulate weight. So why is the same delay present when im using a 5 pound pistol, or when I’m using a 100 pound rocket launcher? Or how bout the knife? This is an obvious design flaw, but its clearly not as big an issue as the whole weight simulation.''
