Avoiding WiFi is a good, general prophylactic remedy for many PS3, even GT, problems.

I'll take all of you guys word on that,  I guess I'm one of the few then, that hasn't had any WiFi issues to date.

It might not be as slow as you are thinking.  Some of the GT5 patches do take a long time.
Case in Point.  My circumstances are complicated, but:

I had my PS3 packed away for better than a Year.
A few weeks ago I un-Packed it and decided to Build a driving seat.

But it's not at home, it's at a remote location, connected to a 5mbps internet, through WiFi.

It took me Literally 2 days to download and install all of the patches I had fallen behind on.

a couple PS3 / PSN updates, and I lost count on how many GT5 updates It went through.

I spent at least 5 hours the first day, then had to just leave it on.

And maybe another 5 hours the next day just doing the Updates.

So it's not unreasonable for One patch to Take 30 minutes to more than an Hour or two.

2mbps should be more than adequate for the Patches and on-line play..
When I first got my PS3, I had a 756K dsl line, and that worked okay..

The XL Disc would also let you skip most of the updates, including all the big ones...

Why has noone else mentioned this?

because it sounded like he already had the disc... seemed like a moot point Smiley Wink

there is a common misconception that having a high internet bandwidth (not speed, width) automatically should translate to everything you do on that connect to be fast.  that is not so.

the speed of your download is controled by the server sending it to you.  They have to send that same update to potentially millions of consoles, usually within the first hours and days of its release.

also, these updates are relatively large compared to other things you may download on yoru connection.

speed isn't the issue.  wi-fi is just a bad idea for gaming.

wyldanimal - if you do not have any issues, that's great, but many have found that hosting a room using a wi-fi connection can be troublesome... just what I've heard.

Looks like he has the original.

One option to skip the updates is the XL version. Is $20 worth it to skip the updates? If it gets the game going, it might be....

Not sure if you can install with a borrowed XL disc and then play with your old one, but if so, that might be the ideal solution...

And if you do end up having to buy XL, you do get the early DLC, so that does offset buying a new disc (which do eventually wear out anyway...)

If your PS3 doesn't get the same speeds as your pc then there is a problem with your router or maybe somebody else is using the connection at the same time?   Do a speed test on your PC then on the PS3 they should be the same speeds.  If they're not then check in your routers settings, something's got to be bugged up.  Are both the PC and PS3 wired, if one is wired and one is wifi it'll probably be different speeds, latency will be different.
