What is GT Academy?
GT Academy is a national competition to find the best Gran Turismo players and give one winner the chance to become a professional race car driver. In 2011, Bryan Heitkotter from California was crowned the first US winner of GT Academy at Silverstone, beating out 53,000 racing hopefuls in becoming a professional racecar driver and now racing a Nissan 370Z Nismo RC in the Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series in the top GS (Grand Sport) class.
How does the competition work?
Starting on May 1, 2012, players can download GT Academy 2012 FREE on PlayStation Store through the PlayStation®3. Designed for drivers of all levels, participants will compete in a series of virtual trials using Nissan cars in 8 Rounds of events over an 8-week period. Each Round will have 5 different events that players can retry as many times as they want and only the fastest lap time will be recorded and ranked amongst your friends. Rankings for Round 8 will be compared both nationally and globally
What's the final time trial event?
The 8-week competition will boil down to one FINAL online time trial challenge – Round 8, Event 5. The event is only open from June 11, 2012 to June 24, 2012 so make it count! Only the fastest lap times will be recorded and entered into the national leaderboards so you must improve your results to move up in rankings. The top 32 players (pending eligibility verification) will be flown to the National Finals in July where they will compete against each other to be one of the 16 finalists.
What happens to the top 16 finalists?
The top 16 players in the country get to move on to the GT Academy boot camp, where they will face a week-long series of grueling physical and mental challenges. This includes going behind the wheel of actual Nissan cars to practice and prove their driving skills. Along the way, participants will be eliminated until one remains.
What does the GT Academy winner get?
The grand prize for the GT Academy winner is a spot on a racing team to compete in a real race, all the training and licensing he or she will need in order to prepare. From there, it's up to the winner's passion, determination, and skill.
How old do I have to be to enter?
You must be at least 18 years old as of June 24, 2012 in order to be eligible to win
What other restrictions are there besides age?
GT Academy is open to legal US residents only, so you must live within the 50 states. In order to win, you also must have a valid driver's license, proof of insurance, and not have any prior Driving Under the Influence (DUI) and/or any Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) convictions, and/or any previous felony convictions including Reckless Driving. In addition, those who have an existing competition driving contract, or have previously held a National A or superior MSA license or equivalent, or competed in a national level Karting Championship for more than two full seasons, are not eligible.
The top 16 finalists that made it to the GT Academy 2011 boot camp in Silvertone are also not eligible
Lastly, those that make it to the National Finals are required to participate in a mandatory health screening for physical fitness and vision, and be in good general health in accordance with Motor Sports Assocation medical requirements.
How are rankings calculated?
Your ranking is based solely on your fastest lap time within Round 8, Event 5. Only the fastest lap times will be recorded and entered into the national leaderboards so you must improve your results to move up in rankings.
How many times can I enter?
Once you have accessed Round 8, Event 5, you can compete as many times as you want. The rankings are based on time trials, so you can race as few or as many times as you want. Only your best lap time will be posted to the rankings. If you beat your previous best lap time, your new best lap time will be posted, and possibly move you up in the rankings.
It's not that the fans and players aren't excited, they just didn't hear about it yet. SCEA's marketing people should be posting this notice in this forum, too, not just the blog. Sure the blog is their main contact tool, but come on. This is GT related!
However, I am waiting to hear confirmation on a significant change from last year's competition that will affect a large number of drivers. Less than two weeks to find out.
I will try to find out if the presumption that Canadians are excluded is correct or not. The rules have not been released yet, as far as I see, and the Canadian office was (maybe still is) in negotiations about this.
Remember that the main reason given for not including Canadians in past contests has been legalities and associated costs. However, SCEE can do it for many more countries...
