King Augeias of Elis which is in the western Peloponnesos possessed an enormous herd of cattle, and for Herakles' fifth labor he was to clean it. He did so by redirecting the flow of water from river Aeiphos. Once it was done, Augieas did not give Herakles his payment. Enraged, after his labors he crafted an army to invade Elis. He was repelled at first, Augeias had a very strong family and Herakles fell ill during the war. After he recovered, he invaded Elis again, successfully killing Augieas and his family. As celebration, he founded the Olympic games in Elis.
