Reliability of the UPNP is dependent of the router's implementation.
Case in point: My secondary stock Netcore 605GR hasa crap implementation of UPNP, while my DD-WRT'd Linksys works great and a TRENDNET with the D-Link firmware works ok.

If your Router does UPnP properly, you could turn that on, and enable it on the PS3 and 360 and you wouldn't need to forward ports at all.
