Guys, I hope this information will help some of you about the black screen problem.
It looks like overheating problem to me. Base on what I heard Sony always advise you to move to "cooler" environment, and the symptoms: black screen, images degraded, flickering, red and ultimately death.
I bought my display 2 weeks ago. Sure enough, Black Screen happened on the second day of use and the images start to degraded. I check at the back of the display, it is hot to the touch. I used a good flash light to look to the inside, there is no fan built-in to cool off the display. It is rely on the under design heat sink. next day, I put a small fan on the back. "Black Screen" problem go away.
So I came up with a "USB fan" mounted to the back of the display. The reason to use USB fan is that I can use the USB port hidden on the lower left side of the display to power the fan. I can post the picture of how I mount the fan to the back of the display if some of you interested to see how? Just show me how to post picture here. After a week of extensive uses, I'm happy to report there's NO "Black Screen" happen ever again. The display is now runs a lot cooler. I just feel warm after many straight hours of use. The cost for USB fan is $6 + tax from Fry's electronic. It is quiet, small and thin fit nicely on the back of the display.
Other also have problem with wall mount the display to the wall. I happened to find a good wall mount for the display too. It cost about $20 on Ebay and fit perfectly. I now have my display mounted to the wall. I can tell you which wall mount I use if any of you interested and I can also post pictures of my display on the wall if you want to see.
Again, I hope someone will get some useful infomaiton out of my post to "cure" your display and mount it on a wall like me if you like. After all, it's a nice display compliment with my PS3. I also use a PS3 Media/blueray remote control ($22 on Amazon.com) and recommend it if you own both the display and PS3.
I think Sony was trying "fan less" approach to reduce noise and lower cost, but they don't design the heatsink good enough.
Good luck you all with your new display.

Guys,
When you RMA the defect monitor back to Sony, do you have to pay for shipping?

Purchased one of the 3D displays from Gamestop and it started having the black screen issue 24 hours after I bought it. I am waiting on a call back from Gamestop, but their customer service seems worthless. Now I called Sony customer support and they are even more worthless. There is no way I am going to be completely without a television for the 3 weeks they quoted me for the turn-around time to send it in to the repair facility. I am really done buying any products from Sony as I have had nothing but problems out of all of them the last many years now. Sony as a company and hardware manufacturer has really gone down the toilet...

What kind of usb fan did you buy for it? I went to frys and they said they don't carry usb fans anymore so I was wondering if you had a link as to where I could by the fan you used

Guys,
Here is the link to the wall mount on ebay.
You can easily win the bid for ~$20-$30
Yes. I use the 4 screws on the back where the sub-woofer is. THe supplied screws come with the kit are too big. You just have to buy 2 small screws from HomeDepot and Ace Hardware in my case. Bring the original screw you removed from the display and buy 4 longer ones (1/2 inch. The original screws are 1/4 inch and was too short), also remember to buy 4 washers and that it.
About the fan, I'll look up the model for you. My wife just put the box away. I have to go find it. I suggest to turn off the display once you notice the black screen because the longer you keep it on, the more damages it made. My display is still going strong after the modified. I'm very happy with it. Keep playing for 5-6 hours straight no problem.
I'm off to find the box for the fan and wall mount. I'll come back with model number for fan and wall mount kit if I find it.

Found the box.
Fan : Kinyo, Model: CF-201 ($6 at Frys)
You'll need to remove the 4 foldable stand by ripping it of (it's just a snap in), it will reveal 4 mounting holes. Find 2 or 4 screws that a little bigger than the vent opening, you'll have no problem to srew the fan on the back of the display. Since the fan is very small and light weight, I use only 2 screws to mount it.
For those that fans doesn't work, your display might be permanantly damaged when you leave it on for so long after the black screen happen, or you simply got the defected unit. Get that exchange and do the fan mod right away. I hate to go through RMA process, it's a hassle.
Wall mount is: Brateck, model: EAT122-01.
Good luck.

Repeating what BinaryJay said and I had earlier...
THIS IS NOT A OVERHEATING ISSUE.
Mine black screened 40 seconds, 40 SECONDS turning it on out of the box new. And it continued to do it for about 3 minutes straight. It's completely random, even the red blinking lights of death would occur and go away.
A fan WILL NOT FIX YOUR DISPLAY. Even amshockeyfan has a display with NO BLINKING LIGHT and had it running for almost a week straight.
RMA it to Sony. It's free, it's fast, and it works. I've had 3 displays before I RMA'd, that was the only thing that worked. I left it on for 3 days straight WITHOUT A FAN and it works fine. The fan thing was tried and proven wrong months ago.
