Swell. My 2nd PS3 within the past 2 months has broken down.
Plugged it in to the power supply, no red light, no beeps, nothing. $125 repair quote and online reading suggests I should just buy another one.
Had my launch 80GB PS3 go strong for almost 5 years before getting the YLOD. Repaired it through a 3rd party and it lasted for 2 months before getting the YLOD again (I was aware that would happen, but $35 was worth it to me to get my game out of the system and transfer saved data).
From there, went on craigslist and bought a used PS3 ($150). Bluray drive crapped out after about a month so figured okay, a little bad luck but I can just get another one. I still use this one for downloadable games, netflix and NFL Sunday Ticket.
Next, I found a NEW ps3 on craigslist ($200) someone had obtained from a raffle (made sure the tape was still sealing the box, powered up PS3 and it displayed information confirming it was a new console). Worked great for almost 3 months (purchased in September) and now has that power failure I described above. No warranty is available since I bought it from someone else.
Not sure I can afford to buy three PS3's within 4 months. Sounds like a waste of money if I'm just going to continually get shafted by this string of bad luck.
Are PSN accounts transferable?

You cant legally sell your account, but you could do it illegally.
You can easily transfer your account to a new PS3, but now that Nov 18-2011 has passed you are extremely limited with what you can do with an account.
You can have one account set up on a maximum of two PS3's at any one time.
That third PS3 will need its own account, and have to repurchase anything you want to use on it. Or go through the process of deactivating a ps3 to reactivate another but you can only do that like every six months or something like that.
Sony will tell you olkder purchases are not affected, but seeings how you need to deactivate the older consoles to activate a new one all your old purchases will be 100% effected.
I can explain further but really not OT.
You may be able to fix the PS3's yourself? Some of the power failure issues seem to go away in time for some reason.
I got a broken PS3 from a friend, opened it up to test, put it back together and it worked!
Thats how electrical work goes sometimes.
I had a computer, lightning storm one night and it wouldnt turn on, a week later it works fine again and ever since.
You have three ps3's should be able to get one working with all those parts!
Cheers.

Used PS3s are risky, because people tend to offload them when they start to go wrong. They sometimes do piecemeal repairs too. As you've noticed, Sony usually doesn't honor warranty claims without the receipt, but there's a chance you might get the right customer support agent on the line.
Tell them it was a company raffle and that you bought another early console that died. Throw you a bone.

Hey, thanks a lot for the suggestions.
I do have a rented copy of Rage stuck inside so it may be worth it to take it apart and see what I can find.
Amazon has a decent return policy so I can always return the Rage replacement ($23) I bought off them if I can get it to work.
I recently moved far from home to a new state so I rely heavily on the PS3 for entertainment when I'm not working. Plus, my game pass is going to waste. Plus, I recently purchased a 3D tv and it would be nice to be able to play some games in 3D.
Potatobreath, I contemplated doing that resell strategy on craigslist with my repaired YLOD fat 80gb ps3 (3rd party repair - $35), but since I knew those repair jobs last about 1 - 3 months, I made sure to note that in the ad. I won't claim to be perfect when it comes to ethics/morals but I try my best to avoid being a jerk. I did not end up making a sale on that console but I still get offers for around $90 even w/ it broken.
Phillyblunz, I'd be afraid to take apart the one w/ the broken blu-ray drive since the other functions seem to be working fine. Maybe I'll do some further research to see how complicated replacing the drive would be and consider it then. Or if I can take the drive out of the fat 80gb ps3, that would be ideal.
I see what you're getting at w/ the new policy regarding downloaded content. The only drawback I see to that is the limitations on how many times you can activate/deactivate in a given year. With someone in my situtation, it's going to take some planning. Just glad I didn't do anything last week right before my console broke down.
I did post this recent broken ps3 on craigslist and someone was nice enough to reply with the suggestion to let it sit for 3 days and try it again. I hope I am lucky with this power failure and it magically goes away in a few days.
That's pretty lame that I can't sell something that I paid for (my PSN account). You can argue I didn't technically pay for it, but I had to spend money to get it so I consider that paying for it.
To be clear, I meant I would sell my PSN account and never use it again myself, therefore, transferring ownership.

Oh, and I forgot to mention.
A small omission about the two PS3's that broke on me within the past two months: They both had the game 'Rage' recently installed on them. Just days later, they break. If anyone has a similar problem with Rage and broken down PS3's, please let me know - as far fetched as that seems (and probably why I forgot to mention it).
I was renting it from Blockbuster, which only has 1 copy of the game so I'm wondering if that particular disc may be the culprit.

The playstation 3 I mentioned in which the bluray drive was broken is now working fine. I read somewhere online to tilt the ps3 upwards so that the back of the ps3 is facing the ground, just after inserting a disc to start a game. I did that for maybe a week in order to get the game to load and after that it would start up normally without having to tilt it.
