Problems starting playonline viewer to install

I'm having problems starting the playonline viewer. It makes the screen go black for a while (20 sec?) and then drops me right back into the PS2 browser, showing the top level with HDD and memory cards.

This is really irritating: midnight racer says I have a valid online configuration on my memory card. The tester thing says it's okay.

The irritating thing is, the written booklet for FFXI says I should run the game from the disk to activate the game. BUt when I do that, the disc says "go run the PlayOnline viewer from the HDD to install".

But the playonline viewer wont run?!?!?!?!

Any clues?

First off, make sure you use the POL disc, not the FFXI disc. Thats a common mistake.

If your still getting this problem, then the only thing I can suggest is reformatting your HDD and re-installing everything.

Also, pop in that HDD Utility disc and run a Diagnosis, and make it attempt to repair anything and everything. You actually might wanna do this first.

Re: Problems starting playonline viewer to install

Ok.. this ticked me off, too.  I couldn't figure it out for the first 20 minutes of having the game, but here goes:
,

,
1) Make sure you insert Disc 2 from the FFXI case.  Not Disc 1.  If you put in disc 1, this happens.
,

,
2) After activating the game with the disc, open the PS2 browser, go to the Harddrive, and choose 'PlayOnline' (should be the icon in the lower right hand side).  If you choose the briefcase looking icon, or the two character icons, nothing will happen, and you will be told that you have to start the game from within the viewer.
,

,
You should be able to create your character and start the game after doing this.

Re: Problems starting playonline viewer to install

Thanks. confirmed that this is the problem.

I saw one disk labeled "FFXI" and one disk labeled "Tetra Master", and I thought "Hey, I dont want to play taht stupid side-game, I want to play FFXI!"

Arrrg. Didnt help that the quick-start instructions are wrong. THey say that everything is preinstalled, and all you have to do is insert the FFXI disk "for validation".

Nope. Even though, there already is an icon for "PlayOnline Viewer", you have to install the viewer. Which creates yet another icon named the same thing! Ugh! Whoever designed this installer stuff needs to look for a new career.

Not to mention that when it finally got to the point of "installing" FFXI on my brand new hard drive.. it claimed it was already installed, and warned me about overwriting things.
Arrrrggg.....

at least the silly thing is installed now.

Re: Problems starting playonline viewer to install

Actually, if you have more than 1 playonline icon, it is time to format the hdd with the utilities and start over. You should only have 4 icons on your hdd when you boot the PS2. Not sure why you would have gotten another.

I would format the disc and start from scratch. It will make your life a little easier in the end, even though it is a pain at the moment.

If you really need help, you might wanna check out the Quick Start Guide in the FFXI Case. You might get a quicker answer this way.

BTW, you should only have 2 POL Viewer icons on the HDD. One in a folder, and one NOT in a folder. You click the one NOT in the folder

Re: Problems starting playonline viewer to install

Had you read the topic before posting, you'd see your answer in the 4th post, and wouldn't have bumped a 6 year old thread. You moved the HDD to the new PS2 without reinstalling it. Bootable software locks to the PS2 that installs it. If you try to boot that install on a different PS2, it kicks you back to the Browser. You have to reinstall the game on the new PS2 to be able to play it off that hard drive.
