www.ffxiclopedia.org is by far the best website out there for information on FFXI.  They have a very active forum and you are probably better off posting questions there.

I play on Cerberus when I play. One thing I love about FFXI and has me pop back in from time to time is that you really can see everything with one character. You don't need to make a ton of alts since you can job switch.
