Yea I downloaded the Hardware stuff from the PSN Store. And still nothing. I put the disk in the PS3 and try loading it but after a few flickers of the screen it goes back to my PS3 Homepage and pops up a message saying The Disk isn't compatible with the PS3, check list of supported PS2 games on "this site" under support. So I checked and Final FAntasy 11 is not there.  I have the New 80gb PS3, Anyone download FFX1 to the new 80gb PS3 yet? Help

Re: Installing Final Fantasy 11 on PS3

Question to the people who think PS2 is the core platform of the game:

Why is FFXI no longer available for purchase on PS2? (Regardless of the need of an HDD..) Why is the software itself NOT available for purchase? Even via the SE store.

The full set of software is readily available for Windows. Its easy to find on Xbox... What is your answer?

Sony discontinued the version of the Playstation 2 that was compatable with the HDD. Therefor Sony discontinued the HDD and SE had no choice since the HDD was required for their game. As far as the software itself being available, there was no reason for it to be. Without the HDD there was no life for the PS2 version.

However since the relase of the PS3 there is now a reason for SE to release the software... and guess what -- They are. In a few short weeks you can purchase the Vana'diel Collection 2008 for PS2. Which, up until the 80GB and 40GB was fully functional on PS3. Well, well, would you look at that -- It appears FFXI drew the short straw for Sony's support again.

Why is it readily available on the other systems? There's a very, very, simple answer for that. At no point in history was FFXI unplayable on those systems because of a lack of hardware support.

Just to let everyone know, ffxi can now be played on the 80gb ps3 since the new update today. I tried it today and it now asks to make a file petition for playonline.

You can't be regardless of the HDD, as the HDD is absolutely required. If Sony is selling HDDs anymore, it's useless to sell the software discs. Also, every North American HDD sold for use with games was bundled with a copy of the game, so there were as many copies of FFXI sold as there were units of required hardware needed to use the game. There's no reason to release the software by itself in that light, until the PS3 came out and made the game playable with what comes with the system instead of needing to find discontinued additional hardware.

FFXI has had an all-in-one box released for PS2 every year in Japan since release, because HDD-compatible PS2 models there weren't dicontinued. SCEA just pulled the plug on the required hardware here, making the number of possible players on that platform very finite, epecially paired with the rate of hardware failure in this region compared to Japan.

So the game hasn't been out of print, except in North America where Sony forced it to be such.

Re: Installing Final Fantasy 11 on PS3

The new 80 GB PS2 model doesn't play PS2 games. The old one does, but they recently released a new model without PS2 support. If you just bought it, you got the incompatible new model that is essentially an upgraded 40 GB system.

Re: Installing Final Fantasy 11 on PS3

I just bought the FFIX Online for PS2 so that I could play it on my ps3. Now Ive heard different rumors on wheater this software works on my PS3 so that I may play online. Some say Yes others Say No, The people that said Yes said that, Depending on if you could get playstation online to install to the Hd and then install the disc like Normal. There were other people that stated that when they Put the disc in to install it into the ps3, they get a black error and it comes back saiding that the game is not compatible with the PS3. That Sony needed a patch to fix the Problem and that was released and fixed the problem. Other Say just say Yes. Now Ive wanted to test this theroy on whether it would work or not on my ps3 so I ordered the collection 2008 edition for ps2 with expitdied shipping.. (Sorry dont know how to spell )  lol and see if it works or not. If it doesnt I will sell the copy on Ebay. and They just released another expanison to the game last year 2007 for the PS2 so its not going to die off, Im sure even tho I havent tested as of yet.. that it will work on my PS3. I will report back when I get it and if It works.... to save people Time and Money, because believe you me, Theres no sense in getting something that May Or Not work on your PS3... let someone test it and see whats REALLY going on... ha alright with that Im out!

Well, it's a matter of what version of the PS3 you got. In short, if your PS3 will play PS2 games (ala backwards compatability) it will play Final Fantasy XI. Because there is many Playstation 3 SKU's floating around out there, it's impossible to say a definite "yes" or a definite "no" on the matter -- It all depends on which PS3 SKU you have.
