I didn't find it too scary, either. Having said that, I think the setting was mainly to blame for it's loss of scare-factor. I just look at the Sprawl as far less ominous in comparison to the completely solitary Ishimura.
However, there were a few moments that made me jump and a few spots where I felt pretty anxious.

I prefer psychological horror video games so this puts me in a bad position to analyze the scare factor in video games such as Dead Space and Dead Space 2. These video games primarily utilize jump-out-at-you scares, which is precisely why they don’t strike me as terribly frightening video games. In order for a video game to truly frighten me it needs to try something more than simply throwing enemies at me when I least expect them.

youre right, DS2 had a Larger Number Of Necromorphs,in some situations Making The Only Choice To Run,or be overwhelmed
and stronger More Tactical Enemies, like the Puker and And the One That Hides and takes selective runs at you, wich makes the player involved in alot more action(I just hope they dont make a necromorph that can fire weapons, like the Resident Gear 5 Mistake)
also, another reason, this is nothing new to Isaac(along with the player),after his experiences on the Ishimura,he pretty much knows what to expect from the creatures the markers create, so while its still tense and disturbing,Isaac has become desensitized to the horror

It didn't scare me either. Although the last couple of chapters in really picked up adrenaline wise, I was rather underwhelmed by the scare/horror part of the game. Don't get me wrong I loved DS1 and DS2, it takes a lot to scare me and video games just don't do it. And before anyone says I didn't play in the dark, full volume, and at night, it wouldn't have made a difference.

I'm on my 4th playthrough and still jump every now and then. I love the game. The first playthrough was the best. The atmosphere in the first levels(before the engineering suit) is fantastic. There's barely any enemies, but little things like a tv suddenly turning on in a dark room or steam suddenly releasing create a sense of anxiety in you, setting you up for the coming jump out of a vent scares. Can't say it enough, I love this game!

I also thought that 2 wasnt as scarry. But it was still alot of fun. I didnt like the chapter where we were back in the ship from 1, it was a waste of a chapter.

Im early into the game and i certainly dont think its scary as DS1. Probably because all the necros are the same old, same old...
