Re: Top five reasons why I hate Dark Souls

"The game doesn't need a great story, because it has amazing gameplay."

Actually, yea, it does. Without a good story, its just another hack and slash.

The gameplay is good, but nothing special, nor is it anything that hasnt been done before. All the game requires is a bit of attention, perseverance and decent hand - eye cordination to be mastered. No rocket science there.

The game is good for what it is, but it could have been so much more. Though From admitted they bit off more than they could chew with Dark, so maybe next time they will see their vision come to life.

I do not think it is fair to say the game has no story. The same was said about Demon's and this is simply not true. The game doesn't force the story and lore down your throat, it instead leaves hints and clues and secrets for you to uncover and piece the puzzle together.

The thought gone into this is so detailed and vast that it is enough to sustain an entire section of a forum rather busy with people trying to piece everything together and map out the many correlations and happenings that led to your state in the world. There really is a lot to the game that the player can uncover if he choses to.

you say forgettable NPCs? I beg to differ. Yes- it is possible to encounter a NPC once or twice in what you might consider random moments in the game only to listen to them make absolutely no sense at all... ans yes its possible to play through the entire game 1,000 times and not find any NPC story or background. BUT.. let me tell you this- i almost fell into tears over multiple NPCs storyline.. and im generally a hard-ass. all i can tell you is that you have to involve yourself rather deeply to access said storylines. this isnt a fallout type story-telling style where the people in your world stop moving if YOU dont trigger them to do something. if you skip talking to NPCs in DKS thier world keeps moving. its actually like theyre on thier own quests with or without you as a friend/companion/enemy. without interaction they will continue on thier own journey and proceed to die, fail, succeed, get away with it or just dissapear out of your world. i think the way the story CAN develop IF you choose to involve yourself is completely genius. you come to find out what makes them tick - and when that happens.. and you follow THIER journey through this creul dark world... that will be the point that the character will be etched into your mind forever. read the descriptions of items. pay close attention to every detail. TRY to put thier story together and you will understand.

and BTW... i started on SOCOM(the first one) for ps2. granted i skipped COD games but i love good realistic FPS that require teamwork and a plan of action to succeed... ive logged hundreds of hours on BF3 and i find some remarks extremely stereo typical and wanted you to know im currently in the painted world with a squishy dex faith build that carrys a bow and a broadsword and refuses to use a shield wearing the dingy set and carefully and methodically navigating worlds and engaging enemies. hell ive beat the game in starting wanderer gear with no shield either. so im not sure what those comments were about but i consider myself a true gamer thats flexible, innovative and uses imagination to achieve my goal. pretty good at it too.

just dont want you all thinking everyone who plays(and loves) FPSers is a braindead brute with zero intelligence. thanks for reading.

"stroy in a game is like a story in a porn movie" - John Carmack

that's his (and mine) opinion. anyway stroy is no vital part of a game. the perfection in a game can be achieved without any stories or something. the only thing you need to know is an objective, who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. the rest is not necessary.

the way a game can communicate with the audiance is much stronger than narrative. story is just an option. I tried to explain it to people, but they do not usually accept! people say a game with no story means that it is nothing but pure entertainment! but I don't agree. anyway, I hope you get the point.

about the NPCs, the sense of isolation you have throghout the game is a nessecary part of this game. so that was the best decision to keep the NPCs far away from you, they are on their own, facing their own world, fears, demons. If you care about them, and try to follow them, you'll of course remember them! but if you not, they are stranger with no tendency to communicate with you, they will be gone and you'll never see or hear of them...

about the rest of your complaints, people said enough I guess. another thing about the limited flasks and sorcerries/miracles is that it prevents any possible exploitation using recovery items or sorcerries because they are limited, you can't spam your flasks while facing a Dark Sprit player for example. you know what I'm saying if you are a hardcore Demon's Souls player.

and I still love Demon's Souls more than Dark Souls! I just started a new game with a soldier class. I enjoy it as much as the first playthrough (this one should be my 18th, counting the ring of sincere prayers I have).

hope you can enjoy these games as much as I do. the only problem is that I cannot play anything else except these two!

(sorry for my bad english)

The minimal story and NPC involvement are points in this game's favor.

Been thinking about picking up this title.  Is it really that much of a turnoff?

Dark Souls is a great game. It has good gameplay that complements its rpg elements without overshadowing them. I thoroughly recommend it.
