PS4 Hard Drive Upgrade Error CE-30784-2

21 replies 36576 views Edited Nov 15, 2013

I checked everywhere in the FAQ and have been trying this for like 4 hrs.

I installed the new 1.0 TB Hard Drive and Booted into safe mode to run the update from a USB thumb drive.

I formatted the drive FAT32 and created a PS4 folder with an UPDATE folder with the 800MB update file.

My computer reads the drive perfect. When I try to update through safe mode I get error CE-30784-2

Does anyone have any ideas, I know on the PS3 some USB thumb drives didnt work, could this be the same case here?

I think I may have found the issue related to why you are getting this error! You have to have a two gig or less usb stick formatted to FAT32 with block size 4KB or less to get it to update on your system. There is a know support issue related to machines seeing over 2 GB in the Microsoft Windows architechture and I'm pretty sure this issue is relevant with PS4. I changed out my hard drive and kept receiving this error on a 8, 16, 32, and 64 GB usb sticks and thought all was lost. Then I went here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/140365 and looked up FAT32 requirements and pulled out an old 2 GB usb stick and formated it as stated before. I was then able to update my PS4 in accordance with the instructions off of the website. I think the usb issue will continue until Sony puts out some official guidance on the size limitations of FAT32 and why it is a dead file system that should not be used on a modern console for updates.

I was having all the issues that you guys mentioned. Couldn't update online, my hardrives were not recognized, etc. then I thought about something. I tried downloading the update with an Ethernet connection instead of wifi, and it worked flawlessly. Use an Ethernet connection to download it.

I believe I've found a fix for this problem. I tried 3 USB sticks and all got the same problem. I made sure I followed the install instructions exactly.

However, I noticed that other users having this problem also seemed to have Windows 8 PCs, like myself. I tried formatting the USB sticks using a different PC with an older version of Windows, and the problem is resolved.

It appears that CE-30784-2 is a problem directly resulting from formatting the installation USB drive using a Windows 8 machine.

I used an 8gb pny usb stick. Formatted on windows 8.1 with the default fat32 settings. I guess you can say not all usb sticks work.

Hi all,

This is how I resolved the error.

I used a 2GB usb stick. Formatted it using FAT32formatter-gui.exe. I think you can google it. It's freeware. Then I set "Allocation unit size" to 512, and using "Quick Format" option.

Then I followed Sony official instructions, and it worked.

I'm using Win 8.1. I know that Windows allows formatting in FAT32 with 512 allocation unit size, but I don't know if that will work. I also don't know if anything above 2GB will work too.

Hope this helps.

Good luck y'all. ;-)
