Batman: Arkham City Information Thread ~ (in progress)

164 replies 455 views Edited Apr 12, 2011

By: Argetlam

After Batman's longest night, it looks like it's still not over. The Joker cackles in his seat and Harley Quinn is again at his side. As the inmates and various thugs reak havok among Gotham, it looks like the Dark Knight has another full plate yet again.

2.1 Overview

As of now, details are pretty slim. Will the Challenge Rooms make a return? Will there be more DLC? Most likely, but until anything official is announced, we're obviously unsure. Here is what we know so far, though:
  • Multiplayer has been confirmed but details are still in the dark.
  • The sequel will be much darker than the first. Perhaps The Dark Knight kind of dark.
  • Detective Mode will be dumbed-down, consequently not allowing the player to use it for the entire game.
  • New characters will be in the sequel, including Two-Face, Catwoman, Talia al Ghul, and Mr. Freeze.

Gameinformer details below:

  • Sharp has taken credit for stopping Joker's madness in the first game, thereby winning the mayoral election. He has fenced-off a portion of Gotham and put the criminals inside, all of whom are watched over by mercenaries from an organization called Tyger.
  • The game takes place a year after Arkham Asylum.
  • Hugo Strange, a dangerous man, heads the new Arkham City.
  • Two-Face, soon after being admitted to the City, plans to execute Catwoman publicly, unsurprisingly enticing Batman to enter the City and save her.
  • "We want to top everything that we did in the last game. We didn't want to do an Arkham 1.5." - Arkham City director Sefton Hill.
  • Batman can navigate the City but the experience still feels concentrated like the first.
  • They're trying to create the most "detailed and rich city that has ever been realized in a video game," with a "story around every corner."
  • Thugs are more diverse in their appearance and some that are armored can take more damage and require Batman to approach them differently (cape stun).
  • Batman can now dive bomb, wire walk, and come out of a roll to choke enemies.
  • While enemies are being choked, the player can hit a button at just the right time to bring them down more quickly.
  • Batman can spray explosive gel on the backs of enemies (gadgets play a larger role in combat this time around).
  • Batman can summon a swarm of bats to distract his enemies.
  • Enemies can throw things like chairs and Batman can catch them and throw them right back.
  • Batman can now perform two counters at once.
  • Joker suffers from some unknown illness.
  • Crime scenes are more complicated.
  • Batman will still have some of the gadgets that he had in the first game to start off with, each still with room for upgrades.
  • Batman has access to a criminal database, allowing him to keep track of every dirty villain in Arkham City.
  • Interrogating criminals replaces the Riddler maps.
  • Earning the Riddler Trophies will be much more difficult, each functioning like a puzzle.
  • The Bat Claw has a fetching feature.
  • Batman can now taunt criminals, and depending on their nerves, they may flee or stay to fight.
  • Zsasz returns in the form of a large side-mission.
  • Batman can now perform "beat downs," attacks that come with plenty of punches in rapid succession.
  • Rocksteady wants to bring Batman face-to-face with the villains more often this time around.
  • Batman now has smoke pellets to get out of tough situations.
  • Batman can now burst through weak walls, "like Kool-Aid Man."
  • Batman now has a broadcast analyzer that can track Joker's transmissions or allow him to listen to Gotham FM, a station that will reveal many more secrets.
  • Batman has new silent takedowns, one of which has him strangle the enemy with his legs.

2.2 Characters

Heroes

With more abilities at his disposal (dive bomb, new silent takedowns, being able to counter two attacks at once) and new gadgets (Bat Claw fetch feature, smoke pellets, bat swarm), Batman is better prepared to take on the thugs of Arkham City. He'll need these new additions in order to save Catwoman.

Planned to be publicly executed by Two-Face, Catwoman must watch her back, along with the help of Batman.

Villians

Well, look who it is. The party leader himself. Coming off of his power high from the first game, he's still looking to stir things up. What are his motives this time? They probably involve the words "death", "murder", "destruction", and a little bit of giggling in between. Sure, he may be plagued by some illness but his plan to kill Batman remains as vigilant as ever.

har2.png picture by Argetlam532

The sexy nurse and assistant to Joker is also back. Sporting a new outfit and a Joker tattoo on her hip as well, she's just as dangerous as before. In an attempt to diagnose Joker's illness, she kidnapped a doctor.

Strange (a very fitting name) is brought in by Sharp to head Arkham City. Any who look into what he's about mysteriously disappear.

No details as of now.

two2.png picture by Argetlam532

Looking to gain honor among the thugs of Arkham City, Two-Face's plan is to publicly execute Catwoman.

No details as of now.

In the form of a large side-mission (via phone booth), Zsasz is back to torment Batman.

thugs2.png picture by Argetlam532

Their appearance will be much more diverse. Also, the armored ones will require more work out of Batman. Others, however, flee at the sight of his new taunt ability.

Detective Vision Being Toned Down for Arkham Asylum 2
Rocksteady dev says making the mode so powerful was a "mistake."

"Detective Vision" was one of the most powerful weapons in Batman's arsenal in Arkham Asylum, enough so that some players went through the entire game without turning the mode off. That won't be the case for the sequel though.

At a talk during the Brighton, UK-based Develop conference, art director David Hego joked that he would want to "cry a little bit" whenever he heard that players were going through the entire game in Detective Mode(via GameSpot).

Detective Vision gave Batman a major advantage over his foes, but also obscured the carefully developed art style, he said.

"It was a gameplay decision to make detective vision so strong... we're going to try not to do that mistake again," Hego said.

In Arkham Asylum, Detective Vision functions like night-vision goggles, making it easy for a player to find their way in the dark. It also lists enemy weaknesses and highlights things like destructable walls.

Going forward though, Hego said that Rocksteady would "make it more like augmented reality."

Arkham Asylum 2 was announced back in 2009, but only a few details have been revealed. Expect it in mid-to-late 2011.

Warner Bros. registers 15 new domain names.

What's the name of the next Batman title from developer Rocksteady? It's probably not going to be Arkham Asylum 2, if new domain names registered by Warner Bros. mean anything.

Spotted by internet sleuth superannuation, the publisher recently registered 15 internet domain names to use for the next title. Some notable ones include: "Arkham City" "Ashes of Gotham" and "City of Arkham."

Warner Bros. currently uses Arkhamhasmoved.com as its home base for the next title.

While details about Arkham Asylum 2 have been slim since its announcement earlier this year, we do know that it will be "really dark" and star villains Mr. Freeze and Talia al Ghul. Mark Hamill, who famously voices the Joker, will thankfully be returning as well.

incgamers - 4.22.10 - Source

Warner Bros is planning to hold back the release of Batman: Arkham Asylum 2 according to a “senior UK retail source.”

The reason behind the delay is apparently to avoid the pre-Christmas competition, a tactic which proved popular with a number of publishers last year.

"We've been told that Warner has acted early to avoid releasing the game into a heavily congested pre-Christmas market," the source told CVG.

"It wants to dominate the first quarter of 2011 instead, when it can get maximum retail space and mindshare amongst gamers."

What do you think of the rumour? Do you think Warner would be right to hold it back? Let us know in the comments section.

Two More Villians Confirmed For Batman: Arkham Asylum 2
Mr. Freeze and Talia al Ghul confirmed for new game.

April 20, 2010 - Two more villains have been confirmed for Batman: Arkham Asylum 2.

Voice actor Maurice LaMarche, who previously voiced Brain in Animaniacs and Egon Spengler in The Real Ghostbusters cartoon, confirmed on the GeekCast Radio podcast he'll be providing the voice for Mr. Freeze in the upcoming sequel.

"Videogames is hard work, I'll say that," LaMarche said. "I've only done a handful, and I'm very lucky right now, I'm about to go in and do Mr. Freeze for Arkham Asylum 2."

LaMarche couldn't go into much detail about the character, but did say Mr. Freeze will be very, very angry.

"To tell you the truth, I think, contractually, I can't. I've got to keep it under wraps," he said when asked to talk about the character. "As for Mr. Freeze's role in the game, he's out for blood right now because... I can't tell you the situation, but he's actually somewhat of a sympathetic character within the framework of the game."

Actor Stana Katic, star of ABC's Castle, also confirmed via her Twitter account she'll be voicing Talia al Ghul, daughter of Ra's al Ghul.

"Just recorded a character voice on the next Batman videogame. Never did that before," she wrote. "For those who were asking: I'm voicing Talia al Ghul, the daughter of Ra al Ghul (played by Liam Neeson in "Batman Begins")." Her posts have since been deleted, but not before LeagueOfComicGeeks.com could snag a screenshot.

The list of villains continues to grow. Over the weekend, Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy confirmed Two-Face would also be in the game. Conroy also said Arkham Asylum 2 will be "really, really dark."

There's a sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum in development, but details on...

Robin Onboard for Arkham Asylum 2?

Two-Face to star too.

March 9, 2010 - Batman's divisive sidekick Robin could be making an appearance in the forthcoming Arkham Asylum 2, with early cast listings revealing the presence of The Boy Wonder.

An IMDB listing for Rocksteady's sequel to its genre-defying Arkham Asylum confirms that Mark Hamill reprises his performance as The Joker, and he's to be joined by Two-Face as actor Bruce Greenwood takes on Harvey Dent and his alter-ego.

What's likely to prove more controversial is the inclusion of Robin, to be played by Vincent Martella who most recently voiced Hope Estheim in Final Fantasy XIII.

Warner Bros. has been coy about the news, telling Kotaku "To our knowledge, what you asked about is inaccurate information. We are not yet discussing details for the sequel."

IGN's resident Batman expert Alex Simmons was keen on the news, saying "I think it's a good idea. not as much of a as people think he is."

Batman: Arkham Asylum Sequel Announced

The Joker drops this year's biggest announcement.

December 12, 2009 - Teased during the opening of Spike's Video Game Award Show, Batman: Arkham Asylum is getting a sequel. The Joker dropped off a giant present for fans in attendance.

No other details, such as a title, were given. But as expected, the location of the sequel may not be at Arkham Asylum as "Arkham has moved" website has been posted, though currently still 404'd.

Based off the trailer shown, it appears the game will take place in Gotham City, or at least certain parts of it. The camera pans through the ruined city streets before making its way through an amusement park, which we can assume is Joker's new hideout.

Developed by Rocksteady, the original garnered universal praise from fans and media. A sequel, while teased early, should come as no surprise.

"We are thrilled to build a global game franchise from Batman: Arkham Asylum, which is receiving an incredible response from gamers and Batman fans around the world," said Martin Tremblay, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. "Rocksteady has taken Batman to a new level in the video game space and we are committed to delivering a sequel the fans will love."

"Getting the opportunity to create Batman: Arkham Asylum and seeing its success has been a dream come true for the team," said Sefton Hill, Game Director, Rocksteady Studios. "We are honored to create the next chapter in this compelling story and promise to deliver another game worthy of the DARK KNIGHT."

Update: The website now works and it appears popular villain Two-Face has been confirmed for the sequel. The website displays a billboard featuring a character dawning an Uncle Sam outfit that's corrupt-looking on one side. The face has been torn off, but we'll bet on it being Harvey Dent playing dress up.

I don't like all the ignorant people claiming that BatGirl might be in this one. If they weren't such noobs, they would know that the girl over your radio IS BatGirl, and she is PARALYZED. Also, I believe that Robin was killed by the Joker already.

thank you, that's been bothering me too. If you paid attention at all to Arkham Asylum, you would realize that Oracle IS Batgirl...

LilDragon3 and Phillynavs3 you guys don't read much comics do you? Because there is MORE than one Batgirl. And the one that people are most likely talking about is Cassandra Cain the daughter of Lady Shiva.

And if Robin HAS indeed been killed already it would be Jason Todd. But this would leave the door open for Tim Drake (The 3rd Robin) to be in the game.

This is a response to your spoiler.

  • I don't think that Warden Sharp is gonna be mayor, considering how he is the spirit of Amadeus Arkham, you know, the crazy guy?

This is a big spoiler, so don't read it unless you have beaten the game around 100%

@LilDragon3 ddid you see my earlier post about Robin and Batgirl?

And speaking of Robin i created a video of all the references to him. If i'm fully correct there are references made to first 2 Robin's in the game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvwLA5k9EHY

But because Barbara is already Oracle it means that Tim Drake would be Robin in this series.

@Argetlam There already is a speculation thread but it hasn't been posted in months.
