Tarot Card Explanation via Amy Hennig (SPOILERS)

I tried to be as vague as I could with my thread title so that people would know what I was referring to, but not enough that people who had not yet played the game would be spoiled and freak out.

If it is still revealing too much, I can change it, and I'm sorry.

Anyways...

I was looking on her twitter and she was willing to answer other people's questions regarding the story through Private Messages, so I thought, "what the hell, I'll msg, too!"  She said she would answer my question if she could, and here is what she said.

I asked her:

"Hey! My question was about "The Tower" tarot card that Talbot planted on Cutter in Syria. Why did Talbot do that? For what purpose? Thanks!"

Her reply:

If you watch closely, you can see that Cutter had three Tarot cards pasted in his journal - The High Priestess, The Magician, and The Tower. (When you get Cutter's journal later, notice that the Tower card is gone...)

When Talbot takes the journal from him, they remove the Tower card and slip it into Cutter's jacket.

You can also see notes in Cutter's journal about the other cards - The High Priestess = Marlowe, The Magician = Talbot.

The Tarot is full of Hermetic symbolism, which ties into what Cutter was saying in that one scene, about the ancient secret society. And how Hermetic mysticism is all tied up in it. So planting the card on Cutter is sort of an ominous, creepy warning to him and the others.  Since it predicted his own fate - or at least the fate they orchestrated for him.

Try googling some stuff about Tarot and The Tower, too. (And the other cards) There's other symbolism there, too, it's just more oblique.  Plus it's all payback for him duping them as Drake's "inside man", earlier. Fitting payback, since he's the one that has deduced all this. Sort of like showing him "oh you think you're so clever, looking who you're f*cking with" :smileywink:

- at this point, I asked if I could post these replies to the forum-, the rest of her replies:

Sure. I tend to like to write stories that require interpretation, rather than laying everything out, so I'm happy to elaborate. :smileyhappy:

So that's the official explanation via Amy Hennig.  I totally missed out on all those details in that journal that Cutter had.  When I replay the game soon, I'm going to pay a lot more attention to those smaller details.

If you see this thread, I just want to say thanks again for taking the time to answer my question!  I really appreciate it.

Random Note: I HATE the 140 limit on Twitter messages. :smileyindifferent:

And in case you think I'm making it up:

Ah you beat me to it. I posted another topic concerning this right after I rewatched some cutscenes. Anyways, the only thing that's left is why Talbot kept disappering. You might as well ask her that lol.

Really cool! Amy is awesome. I hope other people post their questions and her answers here too. I was wondering about the Tarot and now it makes sense. Now what I want to know is what is the deal with Talbot? Judging by her response there he is into the occult for sure. And some say he's an alchemist. I just want his bullet scene explained as well as his disappearance.

I knew I'd seen them in someone's journal.  This is awesome.  Amy is a great storyteller.

I like books/shows/games that have little tid-bits of information that aren't spelled out for us. Just like the Tarot cards - they aren't directly explained, but have a deeper meaning and are very fitting to the situation. It shows that ND put a little extra thought into minor details and gives fans something fun to discuss and speculate on.

I was just going to mention Lost, as it's one of my favor...

Exactly.  Personally, I love games/movies/tv shows* that make me want to do more research online after it's over.  Makes for great conversations and discussion threads on forums, too.  Unfortunately, some people consider it lazy storytelling for some reason.  They want *everything* spelled out for them.

*For example - I'm a HUGE fan of shows like Lost and Fringe because they are so mysterious and don't fully spell things out for you in their stories.  I have spent many a night reading various Lost/Fringe forums and it's always been fun.

I was just going to mention Lost, as it's one of my favorite shows. I love researching and doing background reading on the mythology, background information, and cool tid-bits of my favorite shows. I could spend hours on Lostpedia. Hence why I love this Tarrot card thing, because its a perfect example of something with deeper meaning, and is not spelled out in the game, and gives fans something to look up themselves.

They're like easter eggs when you research some minor detail and learn that it has a deeper meaning.

Another reference would be when Cutter (I think it was him) says something like "and next thing I know you'll have a gun to my head and start talking about rabbits" - this is a reference to Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men (a book that was also mentioned in Lost a few times :smileywink:) It wasn't spelled out so you wouldn't get the reference unless you've looked  it up and/or read the book.

    I've been wanting to give Fringe a go - I've been a big X...

I've been wanting to give Fringe a go - I've been a big X-Files fan for many years, which apparently had a huge influence on both Lost and Fringe. So it's a show that seems right up my alley. It's definitely on my long list of shows to see!

And its very cool to see how Hennig incorporated this into the game :smileyhappy: I love shows/games that give a little extra for fans willing to do a little background research. A great storyteller she is, indeed.

Well that was cool of her to do. Glad to know they went through the effort to add in little things like that to the game.
